Felline combines a historic settlement on a slightly elevated rocky spur with archaeological traces, sacred art and a landscape in which water, clay soil and marsh vegetation play a distinctive role. If you are looking for a place where history is not confined to a single building, Felline takes you from the history of the town into the surrounding area.

History between the castle and the fortifications

The baronial castle of Felline dates back to the 12th century. During paving work on Piazza Castello in 2010, sections of the castle’s original moat were uncovered. The former course of the fortifications can also be traced spatially: it ran from the area around Largo Chiesa and Via Crocefisso, parallel to today’s Via Immacolata, and then northwest to today’s Largo Santa Lucia. The town’s most important gate once stood there, known as Porta Maggiore, Porta Santa Lucia or Porta Grande.

The oldest archaeological evidence of a settlement at this site dates from no earlier than the 2nd century BC. In the Felline area, the Ninfeo Menhir together with the Terenzano Menhir is considered evidence of the area’s ancient origins. This chronological depth adds a much older layer to the later traces of the castle, the line of the walls and the layout of the square.

Church of San Leucio Martire and religious heritage

In the Church of San Leucio Martire, the main altar is made of polychrome Carrara marble. The interior is considered to represent late-18th-century Neapolitan Late Baroque. Above the main altar is a Flemish painting of the Last Supper. For your walk through Felline, the church thus brings together materials, spatial design and painting in one place.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception “Extra Moenia” is associated with a congregation that still exists today. During the feast days, it organizes the most important religious celebrations. Religious tradition is therefore part not only of Felline’s earlier history but also of the town’s present-day festival culture.

Palazzi and a restored Frantoio Ipogeo

Palazzo Trianni, formerly Palazzo D’Amore Santo Mango, features a decorated portal, a Mignano balcony, a clock tower and an inner courtyard. The Frantoio Ipogeo di Felline has been restored; the area above it has been upgraded as a new public meeting space. The two sites show different aspects of the built heritage: here, the architectural details of a palazzo; there, a restored underground olive mill with the public area above it.

Landscape on the rocky spur

On the outskirts of Felline lies the Malora archaeological area on a rocky spur above the plain that opens towards the sea. A small stream that is now seasonal flows at its foot. In the Felline area, water, clay soil and plant life shaped by marsh vegetation are also considered characteristic elements. The landscape is therefore not merely a backdrop for the historic settlement but a distinct part of the way the town is experienced.

Walking tour and Salento cuisine

The tourist walking route in Felline enters the surrounding area southwest of the built-up town centre. This creates a connection between the town centre and the landscape and archaeological themes that define Felline. In the town’s restaurants, you can sample traditional Salento cuisine. During a stay in Felline, historical impressions and regional food culture can thus be experienced together.
