Giuggianello between rock art and sacred architecture

The Cripta di San Giovanni Battista is Byzantine in origin and dates from the 10th or 11th century. Its rectangular interior has a single nave and a star vault. Several canvas paintings form part of the furnishings, including a depiction of the Nativity. The Chiesa madre di Sant'Antonio Abate was built in 1781 on the site of an older structure. Its unfinished façade made of Lecce stone creates its own architectural accent.

Museum, ecomuseum and living tradition

The Museo Civico, also known as the Museo Demo-Etno-Antropologico della cultura contadina, is housed in the Palazzo Lubelli at Via Roma 22 in Giuggianello (LE). The Ecomuseo MiMe Miti e Megaliti offers a broader view of the region and includes the communities of Giuggianello, Minervino di Lecce, Specchia Gallone and Cocumola. On the night of 24 June, the Notte di San Giovanni is still celebrated around the Grotta di San Giovanni. The festivities include sharing food and folk dancing.

Rock formations and rare plants

One of the distinctive natural features is the Furticiddhu te la vecchia rock. It is circular and lens-shaped, stands on an expansive base and has a characteristic mushroom shape with a cap and stem. This shape was created by flowing water and weathering. The La Cutura Botanical Garden also places a clear emphasis on nature: it covers 35 hectares and is home to one of the richest collections of rare succulent and tropical plants.
