Lequile: Churches, Palaces and Rural Salento
Lequile lies in the Valle della Cupa in the heart of Salento. Religious buildings, historic palaces and the agriculturally shaped surroundings come together here to form a place where religious tradition, architectural history and the rural landscape of Apulia directly meet.
Churches and Religious Heritage
The Chiesa di San Vito Martire preserves a relic. The church also houses a wooden statue of San Vito, the patron saint of Lequile, which is highly revered by the local population.
The Guglia di San Vito stands in a public square in Lequile. The pillar, built from Lecce stone, was created in 1694 by the local sculptor Oronzo Rossi and is crowned by a statue of San Vito.
The Chiesa di San Nicola is also called Chiesa del Redentore and is a Baroque church dating from the 17th century. Its dome, decorated with multicoloured majolica tiles, is particularly striking. The church is used for special liturgical occasions, cultural events and guided tours.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Loreto was built in 1597. Its portal has Corinthian columns; above it is a coat of arms featuring a rampant lion.
The Convento di San Francesco was built between 1613 and 1619 as a Franciscan complex with a church and the associated monastic quarters.
One of the oldest religious buildings in Lequile is the Chiesa di San Basilio Magno. It bears witness to the town's medieval history and to the Basilian monastic tradition in Salento.
Palaces and Historic Architecture
The Palazzo dei principi Saluzzo is now called Palazzo De Palma. It was built in the second half of the 17th century, probably based on designs by Mauro and Emanuele Manieri.
Inside the Palazzo dei principi Saluzzo are an oratory, a library containing valuable incunabula and old prints from Apulia, and a chapel dedicated to San Giorgio.
Palazzo Andrioli is housed in a historic building dating from the late 16th century. Together with the churches and Palazzo De Palma, it illustrates the long architectural development that shapes Lequile's townscape.
Menhir and the Salento Landscape
The Aia della Corte Menhir is a 2.85-metre-high monolith made of Lecce stone. It was discovered in 1922 and bears engravings and incised crosses on its surfaces.
The menhir stands in an agriculturally shaped setting that preserves features of Salento's traditional rural landscape. It therefore complements the religious and historic buildings with a monument closely connected to the landscape.
Festivals and Local Traditions
The Festa Patronale in honour of San Vito Martire traditionally takes place on the fourth Sunday in June. Solemn religious ceremonies are combined with a secular programme of traditions, music and fireworks.
The Festa della Madonna della Stella includes the traditional Festa te lu Puruccinu. On this occasion, hard-boiled eggs are sampled with fresh cheese and local wine.
