Torre Mozza: Beach, Dunes and Coastal Landscape

Torre Mozza combines a long white sandy beach with a distinctive coastal landscape. The very fine sand slopes gently into clear, crystal-clear water and stretches for several kilometres. Behind it, high sand dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub form a natural landscape between the shore, the coastal road and the buildings along the seafront promenade.

Beach Sections and Bau Beach

Along the coast, private beach resorts, holiday villages and sections of free beach alternate. As a result, Torre Mozza is not a uniformly developed coastal strip, but rather a succession of different beach areas. A special facility is the Bau Beach in the locality of Torre Mozza. It was established with the aim of enabling people with pets to use the beach as well.

You can reach the Bau Beach via the SP91 between Torre San Giovanni and Torre Vado. Take the “Torre Mozza” exit and then drive towards the centre of the marina and the tower. The beach is located on the right, directly behind a small bridge. This precise guidance is particularly useful if you want to head specifically to this beach section.

Dunes, Nature Park and the Secche di Ugento

The coastal landscape continues into the protected Litorale di Ugento Regional Nature Park. The park stretches along nine kilometres of coastline between Torre San Giovanni and Lido Marini, passing through Torre Mozza. An important natural area in this coastal section is the Secche di Ugento. The “Secche di Ugento” Blue Oasis lies in the stretch of sea between Torre San Giovanni and Lido Marini that runs past Torre Mozza.

From the lighthouse of Torre San Giovanni to Torre Mozza, there are seven basins in the following order: Suddenna, Bianca, Ulmo, Rottacapozza Nord, Rottacapozza Sud, Spunderati Nord and Spunderati Sud. The Secche di Ugento shallows are also recognised as a Presidio Slow Food. This means that the coastal area combines natural and marine features with a regional speciality that extends beyond the beach experience alone.

Tower and Local Event

The name of the locality also refers to its coastal history. The construction of the Torre Mozza, or of the towers in question, is dated—regardless of whether they are the same tower or two different towers—as with many contemporary towers, to the 1560s following the 1563 edict of Viceroy Don Pedro Afan de Rivera.

The Sagra ta Turre, a recurring festival in Torre Mozza, is part of the local tradition. The event was announced as the eighth edition and was also included in Ugento’s 2025 summer programme.
