Merine: Church Art, Local History and Farming Traditions
Merine displays a distinct cultural character through its specific buildings, works of art and rural local history. At its heart are the Chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie and the Cappella di Maria Santissima Assunta; the historic town centre, Lu Sanna and the Sagra te lu Ranu complete this picture.
Church Art in Merine
The Chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie is Merine’s main church. It has a Neoclassical façade made of Lecce stone and a clock tower. This building therefore brings together Neoclassical architecture, Lecce stone and the clock tower in one view. For your travel planning, the church provides a clear focus on architectural design and local history.
Inside, this focus continues with individual furnishings. There is a 17th-century wooden tabernacle, a work by Fra Giuseppe da Soleto. The church also preserves a small organ from 1783, created by Francesco Giovannelli. The different dates offer a glimpse into several historical periods.
Along the side strips of the Chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie, embossed copper panels depict the occupations of Salento’s former rural world. The same church contains a work created in the 18th century by Pietro Surgente of Lecce, depicting Christ Patiens. It also contains a work by Francesco De Matteis, who came from Lecce, dating from 1587. Religious artworks thus stand alongside a direct reference to the working world of the past.
The Cappella di Maria Santissima Assunta is also known as the Chiesa vecchia and Chiesa di San Vito. Dating from the 15th century, it is the oldest place of worship in Merine. Its interior preserves frescoes reminiscent of those in the Basilica di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria in Galatina. Its dating and frescoes create a distinct accent alongside the furnishings of the main church.
Townscape and Farming Traditions
Merine’s historic centre includes small rural houses built from irregular masonry. Lu Sanna is a monolithic column in the middle of the main square, topped by a small statue of the Madonna Assunta. Together with the churches, these features broaden the view from sacred interiors to Merine’s architectural and public character.
The Biblioteca Comunale Carmine Cucugliato is located in the Palazzo Baronale Palmieri-Majola in Merine. Another facet of local tradition is shown by the Sagra te lu Ranu: this recurring festival revolves around grain and the region’s agricultural tradition. Alongside architecture and art, reading, grain and rural life are therefore among the themes that shape Merine.
