Salice Salentino between wine country and culture

Salice Salentino combines a distinctive wine-growing landscape with churches, chapels, museums and traces of history. The municipality is home to around 1,300 hectares of vineyards. Wine and rural culture

One of the prominent destinations is Castello Monaci. The castle is located about 8.4 kilometres from Salice Salentino in the northern part of the municipality and has towers and battlements. The wine museum of Castello Monaci is housed in the old winery dating from the 1930s. Artefacts from the agricultural estate illustrate rural life, wine production and domestic customs in a typical Salento farmhouse.

Another wine museum bears the name “Piero e Salvatore Leone de Castris”. It presents a cultural and historical tour through the three-hundred-year history of the winery. Photographs, old bottles, documents and historic machinery reveal various aspects of this development.

The wine experiences on offer also focus on different aspects. The SIMERA wine tour includes visits to the wine cellar, the wine museum and the castle. The KREOS wine tour combines three glasses of wine with a platter of cold cuts and cheese. The “Food & Wine Tour” offered by Vin-Tour in Salice Salentino includes three wine tastings and a light lunch.

Churches and traces of history

The Franciscan Monastery of Madonna della Visitazione was built in several phases between 1587 and 1597. Its cloister dates from the 16th century and features a quadrangle portico. The monastery church also houses an 18th-century organ, considered one of the few examples of local organ-building craftsmanship.

The Cappella della Madonna del Latte, commonly known as La Cona, was built at the end of the 16th century. After its construction, it became a stopping place for travellers who paused there out of devotion to pray to the Madonna. The Church of Santa Filomena, formerly San Giovanni Battista, is the oldest chapel in Salice Salentino.

The landscape around Salice Salentino contains the remains of the Casa del Re. They are considered to be the former residence of the court of Raimondello Orsini del Balzo and his wife Maria d’Enghien. The range of historic sites therefore extends from sacred buildings to traces of courtly history.

Immersive excursions and events

Salento in Miniatura is a 5,000 m² theme park. It recreates characteristic sites and architectural monuments of Salento at a scale of 1:35. An immersive audio guide with stories, historical anecdotes and regional sounds is available for the tour through the miniature displays.

A different emphasis is provided by SaliComix, a recurring festival in Salice Salentino dedicated to comics, fantasy literature, illustration and pop culture. The fourth edition took place on 11 and 12 July 2026. The programme included exhibitions, workshops, educational activities for children, themed conferences, meetings with authors, game tournaments and inclusive activities.
