Sannicola between Byzantine heritage and the Fiera di San Simone

Sannicola combines sacred sites, traces of Byzantine architectural history, distinctive villas and a two-day event featuring regional culinary culture. Churches and Byzantine heritage

Santa Maria delle Grazie was built in 1640 on the ruins of an earlier Byzantine church. Its main altarpiece was created in 1911. Further construction work took place at Santa Maria delle Grazie between 1793 and 1797; during this work, the wall with the old Byzantine apse was demolished. The Church of Santi Medici is considered the oldest church in Sannicola and adds another important sacred building to this historical picture.

The surviving Church of San Salvatore is the remnant of a Byzantine monastery of the same name. In front of the complex, cart tracks cut into the hard rock are visible. Traces of four holy bishops as well as almost illegible traces of a sacred scene have survived in the apse; Falla Castelfranchi identified the latter as a Deësis. The surviving complex of San Salvatore is in poor condition and largely abandoned.

San Mauro and the landscape around Sannicola

The Church of San Mauro has three naves separated by six imposing pillars painted with the faces of saints. The six pillars visibly structure the church interior; their painted faces of saints are part of the architectural structure inside the sacred building. The Abbey of San Mauro is the surviving part of a monastery built by Basilian monks before the 12th century. The Abbey of San Mauro offers an extraordinary view over the entire Bay of Gallipoli. The area around Sannicola is characterized by Liberty-style villas or villas with arabesque decorations.

The Fiera di San Simone is a two-day event dedicated to tradition, culinary enjoyment and folk music. The Fiera del Gusto of the Fiera di San Simone offers typical products from various Italian regions.
