Churches and Religious Traditions in Surbo

An important event in the annual calendar is the celebration in honour of the town's patron saint, Sant'Oronzo. It takes place in September during the second week, from Friday to Sunday, and includes both civic and religious events. In Surbo's mother church, a chapel dedicated to Sant'Oronzo also commemorates the town's history: it had already been completed in 1667.

Several churches also preserve traces of the past. The present-day building of Santa Maria del Popolo dates from 1590. The church of Maria SS. di Loreto houses a painting from the 17th century. Religious tradition also includes the procession in which the image of the Madonna di Loreto is carried on the Tuesday after Easter.

Santa Maria d'Aurio provides another testimony to the area's older settlement history. The Romanesque church is considered the last visible evidence of the old Casale d'Aurio, which disappeared between the 15th and 17th centuries. For visitors interested in culture, this creates an impression that encompasses not only individual buildings but also the changes the town underwent over several centuries.

Historic Centre and Rural Surroundings

Surbo's historic centre is characterised by courtyard houses and narrow lanes. Spacious church forecourts lie between them, so different forms of the townscape stand directly alongside one another: more enclosed, small-scale areas and open spaces around the churches. This combination gives the centre a distinctive character and makes the architecture an essential part of experiencing the town.

Outside the centre, Surbo is surrounded by farmhouses among olive groves and rural fields. The Masseria Melcarne in the Surbo area also represents this historical and regional context: the ancient fortified complex was later converted into an elegant aristocratic residence.

The Santa Maria di Cerrate Abbey is also accessible from Surbo. As a result, alongside the town's churches and historic buildings, another significant destination forms part of the cultural perspective of planning a trip based in Surbo.

Festivals with a Culinary Connection

The local character is equally evident in the festivals. In June, Surbo hosts the Sagra of «cazzateddha». Another culinary event was the «Sagra della Piscialetta», which took place in Surbo from 4 to and including 6 August 2023. A special homemade ring-shaped pastry was sampled there. Both events link the town's name with regional dishes and give cuisine a visible place in the cultural calendar.
