Arnesano between Tuff Stone, Churches and Tradition

Arnesano’s historical character is particularly evident in the Palazzo Marchesale complex. The building is constructed entirely from hewn tuff stone blocks and currently covers 1,790 m². The Palazzo thus provides a clear architectural focus for anyone wishing to combine historic buildings and local culture during a stay in Arnesano.

The church architecture also reveals the depth of the town’s history. Construction of the three-storey bell tower of the Chiesa Matrice Maria SS. Assunta began between 1720 and 1747; it was completed in 1800. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century on a medieval structure. In Arnesano, you can therefore encounter different construction phases, each of which can be read in specific buildings.

A wall painting in the Palazzo Marchesale shows a view of Lecce taken from Arnesano. It depicts the scattered rural houses of the Valle della Cupa and the lush vegetation.

Further historical traces can be found at Porta Rande, also known as Porta Nuova, which bears an inscription commemorating the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1631. In the Rione Riesci, also known as Li tufi, there is also a Neolithic tomb in which a small limestone idol was found. Architecture, inscriptions and early settlement traces stand side by side here as different ways of accessing history.

The Chiesa di S. Antonio Abate in Arnesano’s historic centre preserves frescoes and works of sacred art. At the same time, it offers liturgical celebrations and prayer times, as well as a place of reflection and encounter for believers and visitors wishing to explore Arnesano’s religious and cultural heritage. This place thus combines religious practice with art and local history.

For practical orientation, the information on accessibility is also relevant. The Chiesa Matrice Maria SS. Assunta meets the accessibility requirements under Italian Ministerial Decree 236/1989 and Article 24 of Law 104/1992. The area around Porta Rande likewise meets these requirements under the same legal provisions. This statement refers to these two locations and does not automatically apply to all routes or areas in Arnesano.

The Cappella di S. Maria di Montevergine is also part of the town’s religious character. The Marian chapel is located in the immediate vicinity of Arnesano, in the Lecce countryside. It was built in 1635, when the place belonged to the territory of Arnesano, and traditionally becomes a pilgrimage destination for the residents of Arnesano on Easter Monday. In Arnesano, the annual tradition in honour of the SS. Crocifisso also includes the blessing of a large cloth from which the “pannolini” bearing the image of the crucifix are cut out.

In the Rione Riesci, fourteen panels depicting the Stations of the Cross were mounted on the walls of the local church in the correct order.
