Tiggiano: Churches, Torre Nasparo and Local Traditions

Tiggiano’s townscape can be viewed through its churches, with architectural and artistic features dating from the 16th to the 18th century, its local traditions and the surrounding cultural landscape. Torre Nasparo adds a historic structure on the Otranto–Leuca coastal road to this picture.

Churches and Their Works of Art

The Chiesa di Sant’Ippazio dates in its present form from the mid-18th century and stands on the site of a church built in the second half of the 16th century. It preserves a baptismal font from the second half of the 16th century. The painting of Sant’Ippazio and its altar in the Chiesa di Sant’Ippazio date from 1626.

The Chiesa della Madonna Assunta probably dates from the late 17th century. Its façade is decorated in the Baroque style; an oval relief of the Virgin is mounted above the portal. The church also houses an organ with pipes from the 18th century. Its period of construction, portal design and organ give the building several clearly distinguishable historical features.

The Oratorio di San Michele

The Oratorio di San Michele was also built before 1590. On January 2, 2001, a fresco of confirmed Renaissance workmanship was discovered behind the altar painting. The building and fresco therefore represent two different historical layers within Tiggiano’s religious architecture.

Torre Nasparo and the Coastal Landscape

Torre Nasparo was built in 1565 and is associated with the towers listed in 1569 by the Regia Corte. Its base is 11 meters wide and shaped like a truncated cone; above the cornice, it becomes cylindrical.

Torre Nasparo is situated in a landscape along the Otranto–Leuca coastal road and stands in visual connection with Torre Palane to the north and Torre Specchia Grande to the south. This creates a tangible connection between tower architecture, the coastal road and the spatial arrangement of historic buildings.

Traditions and a Fixed Feast Day

The Sagra di Sant’Ippazio takes place in Tiggiano (LE) on January 19. Before the procession, men must lift a seven-meter-long wooden pole called “stannardhu” while running. If you would like to include this date in your travel plans, the calendar thus offers a precisely defined feast day with a distinctive custom.

Local Flavor

The Carota giallo-viola di Tiggiano is also known as “Pestanaca de Santu Pati” and comes from Tiggiano (LE). Its name and origin make the carrot a specific local point of reference for travelers who take an interest in regional produce as well as churches and buildings.

Nature in the Surrounding Area

The Parco naturale regionale Costa di Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca – Bosco di Tricase, with holm oak forests and dry-stone walls, is located in the vicinity of Tiggiano.
