Discover Avetrana: History, Festivals and Landscape

Avetrana combines historic architecture, archaeological evidence, country lanes and annual events. In Avetrana, these include the historic district, the Casamatta, country roads between olive groves and masserie, as well as traditional festivals. The square tower of Avetrana Castle has been preserved; the castle is also known as Casale di Santa Maria della Vetrana. The tower is called the Torrione and most likely dates from the Frederickian period.

Historic Places in Avetrana

In Avetrana’s historic district, “li caseddi”, narrow alleys and low houses shape the townscape. The district also includes the Palazzo baronale. The Chiesa Matrice, the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, was completed in 1756 and has three naves.

Archaeology in the Casamatta

The Mostra Archeologica permanente di Avetrana is located in the semi-underground Casamatta of the Complesso Fortilizio. The first area displays archaeological finds dating from the Neolithic to the Roman Imperial period, recovered in 2002 during excavations at Masseria della Marina. The second area contains various animal fossils recovered during excavations carried out at La Grava in 2003.

Caves and Cycling

South of the Avetrana area, the Canale di San Martino complex includes several caves. The Grotta di San Martino is a cave approximately 160 metres long and of archaeological interest.

Festivals with Their Own Traditions

The Giostra dei Rioni has been held in Avetrana since 1985 during the first half of August. The four districts—Castello, San Martino, Saraceno and San Francesco—carry their coats of arms in a procession and compete against one another in games on various themes. The event also includes a historical reenactment of the Middle Ages. On the final evening, the Giostra dei Rioni recreates a historic banquet held by Prince Galeotto Pagano, who was Avetrana’s feudal lord from the 15th to the 16th century.

The Festa Patronale di San Biagio has been celebrated in Avetrana on 28 and 29 April since it was introduced in 1836. The festival includes a procession on the eve, two days of illuminations along Avetrana’s main streets, brass-band music and fireworks. Another tradition in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua involves a procession featuring carts laden with grain.

The Trappeti of Avetrana

Avetrana’s underground trappeti are historic oil mills. In Avetrana, they complement the themes of the Chiesa Matrice, the Palazzo baronale, the Complesso Fortilizio and the archaeological exhibition by adding the subject of olive processing.
