Messapian History in the Museum

The Museo Archeologico “Manduria, Terra di Messapi” displays archaeological finds from necropolises and settlement areas. The museum is housed in a former Augustinian monastery; it also documents the excavation of more than 1,200 graves in the ancient necropolis. From July 15 to September 9, 2026, you can join a guided tour on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. The focus is on the collections, significant artifacts, and the history of the Messapian civilization and the Manduria area.

Churches with Different Historical Layers

The Chiesa Madre della SS. Trinità has a richly decorated Renaissance portal and a large rose window; its interior was expanded from three to five naves in the 18th century. The Chiesa di San Pietro Mandurino consists of an upper chapel, probably dating from the 13th century, and an underground crypt from the 8th century. It is currently closed to the public due to ongoing work to consolidate and enhance the site.

Primitivo Between Viticulture and Tasting

The Museo della Civiltà del Vino Primitivo presents the culture of Primitivo, from growing the vines to producing the wine. To do so, it uses the underground wine cisterns of a 19th-century wine cellar as themed exhibition spaces. The museum offers wine tastings as well as tastings of dishes from the local culinary tradition. This focus connects an agricultural product with the spaces and processes that make its production understandable.

Memory and Unusual Design

The Museo Civico Manduria preserves memories of the First and Second World Wars in a former 18th-century Servite monastery. Two permanent exhibition rooms are dedicated respectively to the First and Second World Wars. A third room is intended for temporary exhibitions, literary events, conferences and commemorative events. Another form of historical design can be found at Il Calvario in Manduria: it was built following a religious mission in 1839, and its mosaic consists of fragments of mirrors, porcelain, crockery, glass and shells.

Summer Exploration of the Walls

During June, July, August and September, “Alla Scoperta della Storia” offers an immersive experience along the monumental walls, through the underground areas and to the Fonte Pliniano in the Parco Archeologico delle Mura Messapiche. This combination of walls, underground areas and spring adds a distinctive element alongside the museums: it allows you to discover Manduria through an engaging exploration of various historical sites. This makes it possible to organize museum visits and seasonal experiences according to different time frames.
