Roccaforzata: Fortress History and Scenic Views

Roccaforzata lies on a 140-metre-high hill, the highest point of Monte Sant’Elia. The historic centre is situated on the edge of a steep drop, surrounding the fortified residence Il Castello. This combination of striking topography, a compact historic centre, and fortified architecture already gives the town a distinctly historical character.

Il Castello and the History of Monte Sant’Elia

Il Castello has a rectangular floor plan and an east-facing façade with the typical appearance of a 15th- and 16th-century feudal residence. Part of the complex dates back to 1407. At that time, the feudal lord Ladislao d’Angiò Durazzo hosted the King of Naples on the occasion of his wedding to Maria d’Enghien. The building therefore represents a local history in which fortified form and courtly context stand side by side.

Monte Sant’Elia also reaches far back into the past. By no later than the 8th century BC, the mountain was inhabited by an Iapygian settlement with a probable defensive structure. From the 7th century BC, a settlement developed there that was probably connected with the territory of the Greek colony of Tarentum. Between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, it was given a defensive wall; two sections of this wall have been excavated.

The town’s sacred heritage includes the Chiesa di San Nicola, a church built by Albanian settlers in the 16th century. It has been mentioned since 1578, when Monsignor Brancaccio visited it; its period of construction is unknown. In the immediate vicinity of Roccaforzata are also the archaeological sites Parco Archeologico delle Mura Greche and Parco Archeologico di Saturo, the Palazzo Cicinelli palace, and Castello Episcopio castle.

Loggia Belvedere is a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding landscapes and the Apulian countryside. The Parco Pubblico Monte della Croce complements this setting as a scenic green space in Roccaforzata. It offers visitors a place for quiet contemplation and relaxation. The Santuario della Madonna della Camera is particularly revered by the people of Roccaforzata and, since 1982, has been the annual destination of a pilgrimage by all the parishes of the Vicaria.
