Hiking between Acquafredda and Medichetta
For active days, the Acquafredda – Fontana della Spina – Medichetta hiking trail is the main attraction. It is 4.652 km long and has 600 m of ascent and 175 m of descent. Its rating is E – Moderate Hiking. The trail connects the Acquafredda frazione in the Comune di Maratea with the Medichetta frazione in the Comune di Rivello. Its length, elevation changes and rating provide an objective basis for comparing this route with other planned activities.
Culture and History in Acquafredda
Acquafredda is home to the remains of the ancient village of Piano degli Zingari. The Villa Nitti is also part of the area's historical character; Francesco Saverio Nitti bought and renovated it in the early 1920s. The Church of the Immaculate Conception preserves an 18th-century sculpture of the Madonna Addolorata.
Another historical development concerns a chapel dating from the mid-18th century. It probably corresponds to today's presbytery; after a later extension completed in 1833, the church acquired the features it has preserved to this day. Porticello Beach is also linked to history: on July 4, 1848, it was the landing place of the patriot Costabile Carducci.
