Girifalco: History, Nature and Cycling Culture

Girifalco combines historic buildings with the landscape of Monte Covello and a clear connection to cycling tourism. The town lies on the slopes of Monte Covello at the entrance to the Parco delle Serre. Those who choose Girifalco for a trip will therefore find both traces of the town’s history and a starting point for exploring nature, architecture and regional everyday life.

The Palazzo Ducale and Sacred History

The Palazzo Ducale stands on Corso Garibaldi and Piazza Umberto I; it is a fortified palace dating from the 13th century. A tower and parts of the surrounding wall have survived from the original fortification. In 1655, Duke Fabrizio Caracciolo transformed the Palazzo Ducale into a noble palace. At the entrance to the former Palazzo Ducale, there is also a marble statue of Duke Fabrizio Caracciolo.

The churches of Girifalco also take visitors through different eras. The Chiesa Matrice was built on the site of the chapel of the Dominican monastery; the monastery ruins are still visible to the right of the church. An earlier Chiesa Matrice near the Chiesa di San Rocco was destroyed by the earthquake of 1783. The church was subsequently moved to a more central location.

The Chiesa del Rosario was built after the earthquake of 1783, while its brotherhood dates back to 1692. The building has two Baroque naves. A coat of arms of the Dominican friars is visible at the crown of the central arch. Another notable trace of the town’s history is the Fontana barocca, which was built in the 17th century at the request of the mayor at the time, Carlo Pacino.

Archaeology, Squares and Local Traditions

At the early medieval San Vincenzo Scalella necropolis, five masonry tombs were excavated: two single graves and three double graves. The burial context dates from the 6th to the 7th century AD. In an outlying area of Girifalco’s historic centre, the Fontana della Canaletta also stands; it was built in 1897. It is an ornamental urban monument with six channels.

In the Pioppi district stands the Pietra dei Monaci, a rocky outcrop regarded as the founding site of Girifalco. Among the Pro Loco’s longest-standing initiatives are the Festa della Madonnina di Monte Covello and the Festa dell’emigrante. These sites and festivals complement the architectural evidence with historical narratives and local traditions, without reducing Girifalco to a single attraction.

Monte Covello and the Cycling Route

Monte Covello is known for its rich flora and extensive forests. The Parco Regionale delle Serre cycling route passes through Girifalco. Bee Products from Girifalco
