Soverato Marina: Sea, Promenade and Calabrian Culture

Soverato Marina combines white sandy beaches and deep sea with natural and cultural attractions.

Sea and Seafront Promenade

Soverato Marina is also known as Soverato and offers white sandy beaches as well as crystal-clear, deep waters. Off the coast, the seabed drops steeply; just a few metres from the shore, fish and marine flora can be observed while snorkelling and diving.

The Soverato seafront promenade is 3 km long and lined with equipped beach resorts, restaurants, bars, green spaces, and gardens with palm trees and oleanders. In Soverato, bathing activities date back to 1881; from the 1960s onwards, the beaches began to be used intensively.

Walking Trails and Nature

The Lungomare Giovanni Paolo II features wide footpaths, green spaces and areas for relaxation. It is suitable for walking, jogging and outdoor activities.

The Calabria Coast to Coast trail begins at Lungomare Europa in Soverato. For about 2 km, it follows a completely car-free seafront promenade northwards and then continues along the beach to Lido Tamada Beach.

As a 55 km-long nature trail, the Cammino begins on the Ionian beaches of the Costa degli Aranci in Soverato and leads via Petrizzi, San Vito sullo Ionio and Monterosso Calabro to Pizzo on the Costa degli Dei. Along the way, it passes through olive groves, vineyards, grain fields, chestnut and beech forests, as well as the natural area around Lake Angitola.

The “Baia di Soverato” Regional Marine Park was established by Regional Law No. 10/2008 and encompasses part of the coastal stretch within the municipality of Soverato. The MUDIMAR Museo Didattico del Mare organises workshops, film screenings, excursions and guided tours, teaching young people about the biodiversity and habitats of the Calabrian sea through educational and recreational activities.

The Santicelli Botanical Garden is home to Mediterranean flora and offers panoramic views over the Gulf of Squillace. Today, it is used for walks and events.

Culture in Soverato and the Surrounding Area

The Chiesa del Rosario dates back to the 17th century and has a Neo-Gothic façade. Corso Umberto is a venue for cultural and social events.

The ruins of Soverato Vecchio are an excursion destination in the surroundings of Soverato Marina. The Chiesa di Maria Santissima Addolorata in Soverato Superiore houses a Pietà and a small museum with works of art and sacred objects.

In the surroundings of Soverato Marina, the marble group Pietà del Gagini was created in 1521 by Antonello Gagini. It depicts Mary holding Christ, who has been taken down from the cross, in her arms.

The Torre Antica was built as a watchtower together with other defensive structures against Saracen raids. The Torre Antica is also known as Torre di Carlo V.

In the surroundings of Soverato Marina, Castello di Poliporto was built in the 18th century to protect maritime trade. In Soverato Superiore, particularly at Largo Cardillo, cultural events and concerts take place.

Fish Cuisine and Events

The Sagra del Pesce has reached its sixth edition and renews a fish festival tradition that has existed for decades. It offers an opportunity to rediscover the authentic flavours of Calabrian seafood cuisine.

Alba a Soverato has reached its ninth edition. The event combines sport, nature and culture and includes an approximately 2 km-long walk at sunrise.
