Martirano Lombardo: History and Clear Local Connections

Martirano Lombardo is a place whose character is closely linked to the reconstruction after the 1905 earthquake. The new settlement of Martirano Lombardo was inaugurated on 23 October 1907, following the earthquake of 7 September 1905. The reconstruction project provided for 206 residential buildings, a kindergarten and a small hospital. This gives you a concrete way to approach a place where history is visible not only in individual dates, but also in its architectural development.

Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has a rectangular floor plan, three naves, a semicircular apse and a hemispherical vault. In 2004, the interior was decorated with frescoes by Hungarian painters depicting the Mysteries of the Luminous Rosary. Architecture and decoration come together here to create a church interior that you can appreciate from different perspectives: from its spatial layout to its religious imagery.

Parco Bombarda: Sport, Picnics and Ecotourism

The Parco Bombarda tourist complex covers 100,000 m². It is divided into a play and sports area, a picnic area, and an area with bar and dining facilities as well as ecotourism services. Parco Bombarda also has a climbing wall for sport climbing. The park therefore offers a range of experiences, from active exercise and shared meals to spending time surrounded by greenery.

Viale dei Tigli and the Town Centre

Viale dei Tigli is approximately 200 metres long and runs parallel to Via Gaspare Colosimo. On hot days, it provides shade and views of Martirano, the Savuto Valley and the entire Sila foothill range. In the centre of Martirano Lombardo, there is also a public drinking-water fountain near the main square. The approximately 200 metres of Viale dei Tigli form a manageable, clearly defined section for exploring the town.

Local Cuisine in Pietrebianche

Every summer, the characteristic hamlet of Pietrebianche in Martirano Lombardo hosts the Sagra della Patata, which reached its 44th edition. At this festival, visitors are offered French fries, potatoes with onions and peppers, grispedde, grispedde ccu’ra sarda ara petrejancara and potato gnocchi, accompanied by local wines.

Line 120 A is also relevant for understanding Martirano Lombardo’s location: it connects the town to Lamezia Terme via San Mango d’Aquino, Nocera Terinese, Gizzeria and Falerna, and continues on to Catanzaro.
