Colosimi between forests, churches and hiking trails

Colosimi presents itself as a place with a distinctive combination of nature, sacred architecture and historic sites of remembrance. Most of the area is covered by forest, while Colosimi is also one of the municipalities included in the Sila Biosphere Reserve. If you would like to combine nature experiences and culture on your journey, you will find a range of themes here to help with your planning.

Churches, Art and Historic Sites

The main church in Colosimi is the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. It houses the statue of Maria SS. Assunta, the patron saint of Colosimi. The feast of Maria SS. Assunta in this church is celebrated on 15 August. Another church with a clear historical classification is the Chiesa della Madonna di Loreto: it is located in the Ischi district of Colosimi and dates from the late 17th century.

The Monumento ai caduti is also one of the town's defining cultural features. The sculpture is an allegory of victory and depicts a sword together with laurel and oak leaves. It was created by the sculptor Ottavio Colosimo, who came from Catanzaro; the Monumento ai caduti dates from the 1920s or 1930s of the 20th century. Palazzo Mascaro is a historic palace from the 18th century on Piazza Plebiscito.

Further points of historical reference include the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie in Rizzuti, dating from 1735, and the Chiesa della Madonna Immacolata e di San Vito in Arcuri, dating from 1752. The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità in Coraci dates from the 17th or 18th century. The Chiesa di Santa Barbara in Carrano and the Chiesa della Madonna Immacolata in Trearie both date from the early 20th century.

Forests, Watercourses and Distinctive Landscapes

The landscape of Colosimi is strongly characterized by forested areas. The Foresta di Faggio di Bocca di Piazza is associated with Colosimi and Bianchi. The area is also rich in watercourses and hiking trails with designated rest and refreshment points. A natural canyon shaped by the Savuto River features imposing rock walls and lush vegetation. These features give your travel planning both a scenic and active focus, without requiring nature and culture to be considered separately.

Hiking Trails and Historic Connections

The Cammino di San Giacomo Maggiore in Calabria is divided into nine stages and is approximately 141 kilometers long. This route is intended to use exclusively public paths as well as provincial, municipal and local roads within and outside built-up areas; private property should not be crossed. A historic connection is the ancient mule track between Colosimi and Parenti. It was once the only connecting route between the two towns. This means that both longer stage planning and shorter hiking interests can be considered as possible ways to experience Colosimi.
