Cosenza combines a settlement history shaped by the Crati Valley and the hills at the confluence of the Crati and Busento with a distinctive historic centre. The Old Town lies on the slope of Colle Pancrazio and stretches along the banks of the Crati. Monumental buildings, patrician palaces and churches stand alongside narrow, winding streets. Sacred Art and History in the Centre

Cosenza Cathedral features a Cistercian-Gothic architectural style. Studies from the late 1940s date its construction to the mid-11th century. An elegant Roman funerary stele returned to Cosenza after more than a hundred years and adds to the perspective on the city’s long history.

Consentia Itinera is the permanent offering of the museum of the same name and comprises seven rooms presenting Cosenza, its history, artistic heritage, myths, events and identity. This includes a 45-minute tour of Cosenza’s origins featuring digital storytelling. It is complemented by a virtual flight over present-day Cosenza using VR headsets. Villa Rendano offers interactive museum activities and workshops for different needs, including board games, treasure hunts, art projects, theatre performances and outdoor activities.

The Castello Svevo di Cosenza also combines historic architecture with cultural events. Its museum rooms regularly host exhibitions by young artists when major exhibitions of national or international interest take place. The garden within the castle walls can be fully used during the spring and summer months. With a covered stage as well as sound and lighting equipment, it serves as an open-air theatre for festivals, event series, readings and performances. Two terraces offer panoramic views over the city and the entire valley.

Getting There and Orientation

Cosenza can be reached via the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway and the Cosenza exit; from there, follow the signs to the historic centre. From Cosenza railway station, you can reach the city centre by taxi in approximately 10 minutes or by city bus routes 15, 16, 17 and 27.
