Art and History in Cosenza

Cosenza is a destination for you if you want to combine historic buildings, art and regional food culture in one city. The Galleria Nazionale di Cosenza is located in the Palazzo Arnone, a building constructed in the 16th century in the historic centre. Its collection includes works by Mattia Preti and Luca Giordano. This gives you a focused introduction to the local art history.

You will encounter particularly rich layers of history at the Castello Normanno-Svevo on Colle Pancrazio, considered Cosenza’s most important monument. Ruggero II restored the complex in 1130. After the earthquake of 1184, Frederick II of Swabia had the castle rebuilt and added an octagonal tower in 1239. During your visit, the ruins of the Cappuccini Church and the Cappuccini Monastery are visible alongside the castle. This site therefore combines different historical periods with architectural traces that can be seen directly.

The cathedral also provides its own distinctive cultural focus. In 2011, UNESCO declared it a “Patrimonio testimone di una cultura di pace”, meaning a “Cultural Heritage Testimony to a Culture of Peace”. The cathedral’s Chapel of the Madonna del Pilerio contains the altarpiece of the same name. This creates a visit in which architecture, religious art and an internationally recognised cultural reference are brought together directly in the same place of worship.

Outdoor Art and Museums

The MAB is an open-air gallery along Cosenza’s main shopping street. It was established in 2006 and expanded in the following years. Here, you can combine art with time spent on a central shopping street. The Museo dei Brettii e degli Enotri offers another perspective on the area’s history. It is housed in a cloister built in the 16th century. The two institutions have different focuses and are therefore suitable for a varied cultural itinerary.

Traditional Cuisine and Seasonal Specialities

Cosenza’s culinary traditions include fusilli, pasta e patate ara tijeddra, patate e pipareddre, broccoli di rapa e salsiccia, and lagane e ciciari. The names point to a cuisine in which pasta, potatoes, vegetables, sausage and pulses play important roles, without requiring you to focus on just one dish. Traditional sweet treats include Mostaccioli di San Giuseppe, as well as focacce made with bee honey or figs, cooked grape must, flour and almonds.

A special seasonal selection consists of the Christmas preparations Cuddrurieddri, Turididdri and Scaliddre. They are distributed at finger-food kiosks along the city’s main streets. If you visit Cosenza during the Christmas season, this way of eating is therefore one of the specific culinary themes around which you can plan your travel interests.

Getting There and Personal Travel Planning

If you are travelling by car, Cosenza can be reached via the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway. From the Cosenza exit, follow the signs to the city’s historic centre. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Cosenza, you can decide on your priorities in advance: historic buildings such as the cathedral and castle, art at the Galleria Nazionale and the MAB, museum visits, or traditional cuisine. This allows you to plan your accommodation around the experiences you particularly want to explore in greater depth in Cosenza.
