Lakes of the Catena Costiera

Lago dei Due Uomini is the largest of a group of small lakes on the Catena Costiera in the municipality of Fagnano Castello in the province of Cosenza. It covers approximately two hectares and is the largest natural lake in Calabria.

Natural Environment and Plant Life

The natural environment also includes the lakes of Fagnano and Monte Caloria. By decree of the Italian Ministry of the Environment dated April 3, 2000, they were recognized as Sites of Community Importance (SCI). Lago Trifoglietti is scientifically significant because of its distinctive plant species; these include Osmunda regalis, whose fronds can grow up to 180 centimeters long. The natural features therefore range from broader landscape contexts to individual plant species.

Rural Life in the Museum

The Museo della civiltà contadina di Fagnano Castello preserves local tools and equipment from agriculture, pastoral life, traditional crafts and the everyday life of the population.

The collection includes an old loom and two more modern treadle sewing machines. It also contains objects used in wine and oil production, as well as a collection of agricultural and pastoral tools. Churches with Baroque Accents

The churches also feature their own historical and architectural accents. The Chiesa dell’Immacolata was rebuilt during the Baroque period over an earlier church building. The interior of the Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo is richly decorated with stucco in a Baroque-inspired style. In the case of the Immacolata, the historical connection lies in the rebuilding over the earlier church building, while for San Pietro it lies in the Baroque-inspired interior decoration. Together, the two churches demonstrate different connections to the history of construction and ornamentation.

A Stage of the Sentiero Italia

On March 16, 2019, the 23.4-kilometer stage of the Sentiero Italia SI UCS 805 from Pietrabianca (Fagnano Castello) to Passo dello Scalone in Sangineto began; it is classified as difficulty level E.
