Orsomarso between Mountains and River Landscapes

For exploration, it offers four nature trails along maintained former municipal roads or mule tracks. Orsomarso is also a starting point for numerous hiking trails in this part of the Parco Nazionale del Pollino. From Orsomarso, the entrance to the Riserva Naturale Valle del Fiume Argentino can be reached via an unpaved road along the Argentino River. Towers, Churches and Caves with a History

The Torre dell’Orologio di Orsomarso makes a striking feature of the townscape. It dominates Orsomarso from the tuff rock on which it was built and has a viewpoint. Among the older religious buildings is the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Mércuri, which dates from the 10th century and is the only surviving testimony to the vanished medieval settlement of Mercourion. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista was built in the 17th century on the remains of a medieval chapel. In the village of Simara, the Grotta di San Michele contains remains of Byzantine frescoes. From 940 to 952/53, it was the hermitage of San Nilo da Rossano. The Cappella dei Santi Cosma e Damiano is also located near the eastern edge of Orsomarso’s built-up area. It retains its features carved into the rock and stands at a location overlooking the Argentino River.

The local cuisine is also closely connected with community life. The annual custom of “U mmitu” di San Giuseppe in Orsomarso is considered a tradition bringing good fortune and blessings. During it, homes are opened to friends, people in need and strangers, and food is offered to them. The Feast of San Giuseppe takes place on 19 March and includes two fires as well as the tasting of typical dishes from the local tradition. A speciality of its own is Fusillo Orsomarsese, handmade fresh pasta in the form of a long, thin strand. The Sagra del Fusillo di Orsomarso belongs to the “Sagra di qualità” quality-festival network of the Unione Nazionale delle Pro Loco d’Italia, Unpli.
