Beach, Stage and Kitesurfing

Several different themes come together in Steccato di Cutro for planning your trip: a long grey sandy beach, water sports, an extensive protected area and historical traces. On the 13th stage of the Cammino della Magna Graecia, Steccato di Cutro is connected with a long grey sandy beach. The stage leads from Cutro to San Leonardo di Cutro. If you would like to combine beach days, activity and culture, you will find various ways to do so.

At Porto Kaleo in Steccato di Cutro, Kitesurf Calabria operates a permanently based kitesurfing school. The school offers kitesurfing courses for beginners, including theoretical instruction, practical exercises on the beach and sessions in the water. Private kitesurfing lessons are also available. If you would like to learn kitesurfing, you can choose between a basic course structure and private instruction.

Protected Area and Other Beaches

The Steccato di Cutro e Costa del Turchese protected area covers 257.99 ha and has a perimeter of 23.05 km. It is crossed by the Fiume Tacina river. In addition to the beach, this gives your nature interests a specific river course as a landscape theme.

There are also four other beaches in the area around Steccato: Spiaggia di Praialonga, Spiaggia di Botricello, Spiaggia di Le Castella and Lido Stella Mattutina. All four are located in the vicinity of Steccato and should therefore not be understood as one single stretch of beach.

Archaeology, History and Culture

Historical traces here range from archaeological finds to an older place name. In the Steccato di Cutro e Costa del Turchese area, several burials were uncovered in 1997, dating from the 6th to the 7th century AD. The village of “de lo Steccato” was also known as “Torre dello Steccato”. It had a church and a tower; the governor of the barony lived in this tower.

The area around Steccato is home to the Sito Archeologico Phrourion de Le Castella archaeological site, the Fortezza Aragonese fortress, the Palazzo De Seta palace and the Museo Meridionale della Lambretta museum. If you are planning to explore culture and history, you can choose between archaeology, fortifications, a palace and a museum. The various destinations therefore offer several thematic directions for your excursions.
