Delianuova: Local History and Trails in the Aspromonte
Delianuowa presents itself as a destination where local history, religious tradition and marked trails in the Aspromonte appeal to different interests. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can focus on either cultural and historical impressions or hiking plans without mixing the two themes.
Local History and Religious Tradition
Pietra Verde, a variety of serpentine, was mined in the village of Cotripa until 1933. Santa Marina was one of the first Italo-Greek monasteries where archaeological excavations were carried out. At Pietra Verde, the focus is on local material history, while at Santa Marina it is on early archaeological research at an Italo-Greek monastery.
The Chiesa dell'Assunta was rebuilt after the 1895 earthquake. Associated with the church is the Feast of Maria Santissima Assunta, which is celebrated every year on 14 and 15 August and includes processions through the town. The processions pass through the town, thereby involving not only the church but also the public space. If you are planning your trip around religious history and local traditions, this period provides a clearly defined point of reference.
The Fontana di Sant’Elia is the only surviving one of Delianuowa’s four artistically designed fountains that existed before the 1783 earthquake.
Marked Trails in the Aspromonte
The Da Bova a Delianuowa hiking trail in the Parco Nazionale dell'Aspromonte is marked with red-white-red signs and the number 128. The historic Da Bova a Delianuowa trail served as a route for contact and exchange between Bova and Pedavoli until the middle of the 19th century. Thus, the same trail name connects a present-day marking with an inherited historical function.
The Sentiero del Brigante can be walked in both directions. The trail has horizontal and vertical white-red markings as well as the SB identification symbols. Being walkable in both directions allows for different walking directions when planning a hike.
On a route in the Parco Nazionale dell'Aspromonte, Piani di Carmelia is a fountain rest area at an altitude of 1,305 metres. As a rest area, Piani di Carmelia forms part of the Sentiero del Brigante. At Monte Cannavi, the Sentiero Bova-Delianuowa, Route 102, meets the Sentiero del Brigante. The altitude of 1,305 metres and the rest-area function thus provide two specific reference points for dividing a hiking stage in the park.
When choosing accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether the Chiesa dell'Assunta, Santa Marina and the Fontana di Sant’Elia or the marked trails in the Aspromonte should take up more of your stay.
