The Varia di Palmi and its festive character

Since 2013, the Varia di Palmi has been part of the UNESCO inscription “Celebrations of big shoulder-borne processional structures”, concerning festivals with large processional structures carried on the shoulders. It is celebrated every few years on the last Sunday in August. The festival therefore has a clearly defined date as well as special religious and cultural significance.

The Varia di Palmi is a huge votive float depicting the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, pushed by 200 young “’mbuttaturi”. Its size, depiction and the collective physical effort are integral to the character of this festival.

Museums spanning antiquity, music and sculpture

The Antiquarium “Nicola de Rosa” houses a portrait bust of Emperor Hadrian (117–138 AD). The Antiquarium “Nicola de Rosa” in Palmi also displays evidence from the Italic, Roman Imperial, medieval and Bronze Age periods. The chronological span thus extends from the Bronze Age through the Italic and Roman Imperial past to the Middle Ages.

The “Francesco Cilea e Nicola Antonio Manfroce” Musical Museum preserves the only known manuscript in the world of the aria “Quando mai tiranne stelle”. It also presents original scores, stage designs and valuable manuscripts relating to the two composers. Here, music history is combined with concrete documents and designs from the artistic milieu.

The “Michele Guerrisi” Plaster Cast Gallery displays works by the sculptor Michele Guerrisi, including plaster casts. This adds another artistic perspective alongside archaeology and music.

Archaeological traces on the promontory

The Taureani Archaeological Park extends across the summit plateau of a rocky promontory at an elevation of 70 m above sea level. Its location and archaeological focus provide a distinct emphasis within Palmi’s historical themes.

The viewpoints Caletta Rovaglioso Scogliera Porto Oreste and Mount St Elia are located in the surrounding area of Palmi. The beaches Marinella Di Palmi, Ulivarella, Spiaggia Costa Viola and Spiaggia Di Palmi are also nearby. These places broaden the cultural perspective to include the coast, landscape and views.
