Saline Joniche between Pantano and the Coast

Saline Joniche connects the natural area of the Pantano di Saline Joniche with the coast and a hiking route associated with the town. The lakes of the Pantano di Saline Joniche serve as a resting place for numerous waterbird species during their annual migrations. For observing nature, the lakes of the Pantano are the specific point of reference; the annual migrations of the waterbirds provide a recurring temporal framework. At the same time, the Pantano is considered the last testimony to the once-famous salt pans of Reggio, which existed until the 18th century.

The CAI rates its difficulty as E and gives an approximate duration of seven hours. When completing the entire route, both the distance and the ascent and descent must be taken into account. For travel planning, the approximate duration of seven hours represents a separate full-day stage. The linear route from the start behind Fucidà to the destination of Pentedattilo should be taken into account when planning the return journey.

Church and Sacred Art

The parish church in Saline Joniche, dedicated to the Santissimo Salvatore, dates from 1918. It houses a Byzantine icon depicting Christ Triumphant, created by Giovanni Raffa.
