Gerace: Discover Churches, Museums and Panoramic Views

Gerace brings together impressive religious buildings, museum treasures and expansive views to create a diverse cultural destination. The co-cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is partly built into the rock and combines a Byzantine ground plan with typical features of Norman cathedrals. The remains of the Norman castle are located in the upper part of the town. It is attributed to the 12th century and was probably made in Jerusalem or in Norman workshops in Sicily. The extensive collection of the Diocesan Museum also includes furnishings and fittings from the cathedral as well as from other places of worship and confraternities in the diocese. Gerace on Foot and with Expansive Views

For getting around locally, the municipality’s recommendation is particularly relevant: the districts of Gerace, which are connected by main roads, should be explored on foot so that the architectural sights can be experienced more fully. The viewpoints also offer their own highlights. Le Bombarde provides panoramic views over almost one hundred kilometers of coastline, while the Piazzale il Baglio near the castle ruins opens onto a panorama across the valley. During the three-day Il Borgo Incantato event, visitors can sample typical products from the area at food stalls set up by Gerace residents.
