Archaeology in the Castello Ducale

The Castello Ducale di Bisaccia has very ancient origins; the first stone probably dates from the 9th century. The Museo Archeologico di Bisaccia is located on the ground floor of the Castello Ducale di Bisaccia. A chronologically structured exhibition route presents finds from excavations on the Cimitero Vecchio hill.

The Museo Civico Archeologico di Bisaccia displays more than 800 finds from the grave goods of 50 burials dating from the Early and Late Iron Age, from the end of the 9th to the 7th century BC. They consist predominantly of ceramic objects and personal ornaments. The combination of the long time span, grave goods and specific objects gives the museum visit a clear archaeological focus.

Educational panels explain the archaeological exhibitions. A permanently projected animated 3D video reconstructs the early protohistoric settlement with scenes from everyday life. Alongside the original finds, explanatory and visual approaches to the early settlement are therefore also available.

No reservation is required for the Museo civico archeologico di Bisaccia. On Mondays, it is open from 17:00 to 19:00, and from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 19:00. Those wishing to incorporate the museum visit firmly into their daily schedule will therefore find two clearly distinct time slots.

Architecture and landscape in the surrounding area

The Chiesa della Natività di Maria, also known as the Concattedrale, is part of the area’s architectural history. It was built by the Normans and has a Gothic-style façade. The Castello Monteverde castle is located in the vicinity of Bisaccia; Mount Monte Calvario is also in the immediate surroundings of Bisaccia. Those who take sacred architecture and nearby destinations into account alongside archaeology thereby give their trip a different cultural focus.

The Formicoso is a plateau with gentle, treeless, steppe-like elevations. For travellers who wish to include open, sparsely wooded areas alongside museums and architecture, this type of landscape provides a distinctive accent.
