Avellino: Between Cultural Heritage and the Monti Picentini
Avellino lies in a basin bordered by the Monti Picentini. As a result, the wider area around the city brings together mountain landscapes, religious buildings, archaeological sites and a distinctive regional culture. If you would like to discover Italy beyond the well-known coastal resorts, Avellino offers many different starting points for planning your trip.
Landscape between mountains and unusual natural phenomena
Monte Vergine, a mountain, is located near Avellino. The wider region is also home to the Santuario di Montevergine, a monastery complex built in 1126 at an altitude of 1,270 metres. You can reach it on foot from Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo or by funicular from Mercogliano.
An unusual natural experience is the Geosito della Mefite in the Valle d'Ansanto. There, gas emissions indicate that the lake's sulphur-rich water is bubbling up. The Mefite's emissions affect vegetation within a radius of three kilometres. Monte Vallatrone, another mountain near Avellino, is also one of the landscape features that shape the character of the region.
The Parco Regionale dei Monti Picentini protects an ecosystem with beech forests, rare orchids and golden eagles. Its paths lead through beech forests, along springs and to viewpoints. The CAI Trail 101 is also of interest to hiking enthusiasts: the “L'alta via dei Monti Picentini” leads to the 1,806-metre summit of Monte Terminio. The trail should therefore be distinguished as a specific landscape theme from the protected nature of the regional park.
Archaeology, churches and urban history
Avellino and the province bring together several historical periods. The Archaeological Park of Aeclanum in the province of Avellino covers around 18 hectares and preserves the remains of a city founded by the Samnite Hirpini and later conquered by Rome. In the Archaeological Area of Avella, the Cippus Abellanus was found among the ruins of Castello di Avella; it is an inscription in the Oscan language dating to around 150 BC. The Roman amphitheatre in the Archaeological Area of Avella was built during the late Republican period in the 1st century BC.
Religious architecture also reaches far back into history. Avellino Cathedral was built in 1132 at the request of Bishop Roberto. Its Romanesque crypt was built around the 6th century AD and has three naves divided by 14 different stone columns. The Abbazia del Goleto in the province of Avellino was built in 1133 at the request of Saint William of Vercelli for a community of monks and nuns. The complex preserves superimposed medieval spaces in Romanesque and Gothic styles.
The Carcere Borbonico in the vicinity of Avellino represents more recent history. It is a museum and served as a prison until 1987. The Museo Civico di Villa Amendola presents a permanent, narrative-chronological exhibition on the history of Avellino in five interconnected rooms, covering the feudal rule of the Caracciolo princely family from 1589 to 1806 through to the earthquake of 23 November 1980. The collection includes one of only two known self-portraits by Cosimo Fanzago in the world. Three bronze rosettes and three bronze lilies from a Baroque tower pinnacle are also permanently on display.
The Museo Irpino, a museum, is located in the vicinity of Avellino. It arranges its archaeological materials chronologically from prehistory to the late Roman period while preserving their original context of origin. Also nearby are the Museo Diocesano Avellino, a museum, and the ancient site of Parco Villa Romana Avellino.
Regional character and suitable trip planning
Pecorino di Carmasciano is also part of the region's identity. In the wider area around Avellino, it is produced artisanally in Carmasciano, in the province of Avellino, from sheep's milk obtained from pastures near the Mefite della Valle d'Ansanto. This means the landscape can be explored not only through its mountains, springs and natural phenomena, but also through a specific local product.
For a trip focused on culture, the Villa Comunale Avellino and Piazza Kennedy, both parks, are also located near Avellino. When choosing a hotel in Avellino, you can therefore combine different interests: urban history and museums, sacred architecture, archaeological sites, regional specialities or trails in the Monti Picentini.
