Culture in the Historic Townscape

Sant'angelo combines sacred architectural history, medieval traces and a landscape that is particularly appealing to travelers interested in culture and nature. The original cathedral of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi was built during the Norman period between 1073 and 1085. In the center of the entablature above the portal of the Cattedrale di Sant'Antonino Martire stands a 16th-century statue of the resurrected Christ; on either side are statues of San Michele and Sant'Antonino dating from the 12th to 13th centuries.

The historic center is also part of the local context: before the 1980 earthquake, it essentially had a medieval structure. Paved streets and elegant squares make the town center suitable for a stroll. The origins of Castello degli Imperiale, also known as Castello degli Imperiali, are traced back to the Lombard period around the 9th century. The castle houses the Museo dell'Opera, which is also an archaeological site and preserves architectural, sculptural and archaeological evidence of the original complex.

Abbey and Sacred Architectural History

The Abbazia del Goleto, also known as Abbazia di San Guglielmo al Goleto, was founded around 1133 by Guglielmo. The Torre Febronia at the abbey is considered a masterpiece of Romanesque art and contains numerous blocks with reliefs from a Roman mausoleum. The abbey also preserves two churches arranged one above the other, marking the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. The older architectural history also includes the church attached to the Convento di San Marco, which was built in the second half of the 13th century.

Landscape, Walks and Stages

Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi is located in the Samnite Apennines between the headwaters of the Torrente Fredane and the left side of the upper Ofanto Valley. The higher parts of the area contain dense forests and grazing land, while more favorable locations include farmland and olive groves. Streams and diverse wildlife also shape the landscape around Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi. It attracts people seeking experiences in nature and hiking opportunities.

The Cammino di Guglielmo is relevant when planning longer routes: the fifth stage ends at the Abbazia del Goleto in the municipality of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and is approximately 22 kilometers long. The sixth stage leads from the abbey to the Santuario di San Gerardo in Materdomini, Caposele, and is 17 kilometers long. On the first Sunday in September, it coincides with the historic annual pilgrimage, during which hundreds of people set out at night from the small towns of Irpinia for the Santuario di San Gerardo. The stage also passes the remains of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi railway station on the Avellino–Rocchetta Sant'Antonio railway line. This railway line has a station 7 kilometers from the built-up area.
