Teora between Hills and History
Teora lies on the crest of a hill at the foot of Monte Cresta del Gallo, in the foothills of the Apennines. The road winding over the hilltops rewards you with expansive panoramic views of the Irpinian mountains and the plateaus between the Ofanto and Calore rivers. This makes the town a destination for you if you would like to combine landscape and local history.
If you are arriving by car, Teora can be reached via the A16 Napoli-Bari motorway. At the Avellino Est exit, continue on the SS Contursi-Lioni.
Watermill, Museum and Traces in Stone
At the edge of the historic centre stands Mulino Corona, a watermill whose construction can be dated approximately to the end of the 18th century. At the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea - Pinacoteca di Teora, the town’s name is associated with contemporary art; the museum is open to everyone and fully accessible. This means that in Teora you can include both a historic mill building and an explicitly accessible museum institution in your cultural itinerary.
Another trace leads to the fountains. The Fontana del Piano bears Teora’s oldest stone inscription. It dates from 1728 and bears the inscription “Refectus”, indicating extensive restoration. The name Fontana del Monte o dei Morti, on the other hand, recalls the carters with hearses who stopped there while transporting the dead to the Cathedral of Conza.
Customs, Feast Days and Local Cuisine
Teora’s customs give the town its own cultural character. The Festa della P'satura e dell'antica Aratura is a traditional event held on 27 July in Contrada Serra di Mezzo in Teora. As part of the festival, there is a competition to saw through a tree trunk using “lu struncon”. This is a crosscut saw; the competition requires the perfect coordination of two people. A typical mask from Teora is Squaqqualacchiun’. It is usually associated with 17 January, the feast of Saint Anthony, and marks the beginning of Carnival.
A culinary tradition is also tied to a fixed date. Pizza di San Martino is a potato gâteau usually prepared on the evening of 11 November. A coin is incorporated into the dough. Whoever finds it in their portion determines the lunch menu on 21 November, known as the Cummit. For you, this provides an insight into a local food culture in which the dish, date and communal decision-making belong together.
The Castello di Morra de Sanctis is also located in the vicinity of Teora. This extends the view beyond the town’s immediate sights without losing focus on the special connection between hills, history, festivals and cuisine.
