Churches, Squares and Ceramic Art

Cerreto Sannita lies on the edge of Parco regionale del Matese and combines a remarkably rich historic centre with impressive natural features. If you would like to combine Italian architecture, ceramics and landscapes, you will find a variety of destinations within a compact thematic area here – from the historic centre to the rock formations and gorges in the surrounding area.

There are almost twenty churches in the centre of Cerreto Sannita. They alternate with palaces, square plazas, old votive chapels and ceramic decorative elements in the streetscape. The sequence of these buildings and squares alone makes the historic centre a worthwhile destination for anyone who wants to experience architecture during their stay not only through individual monuments, but also as part of the townscape.

One of the most distinctive religious buildings is the Collegiata di San Martino. Giovan Battista Manni designed the church, which was completed in 1733. A broad flight of steps with curved sections leads up to its façade. The Baroque Chiesa di San Gennaro provides a different accent: its elliptical dome is covered with cerretese majolica tiles. Inside are wooden statues, paintings, vestments and sacred objects.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, dating from 1616, also preserves important decorative features. These include paintings, stucco decorations and polychrome marble altars. The Collezione Mazzacane in the Museo civico e della Ceramica cerretese offers an insight into the local ceramic tradition. It comprises around 400 works, primarily ceramics from the 18th century made by local masters in Cerreto Sannita, documenting the heyday of cerretese ceramics after the 1688 earthquake.

The museum also preserves works created for Presepiarte. This is an annual exhibition of artistic nativity scenes held during the Christmas season. Another historic building is the Chiesa della Santissima Trinità: it was built from 1690 onwards and opened for worship and solemnly consecrated eight years later. Its left-hand bell tower was rebuilt in 1843 and crowned with a yellow-and-green majolica dome.

Gorges and Unusual Rock Formations

In addition to churches and ceramic art, striking landscape features shape the character of Cerreto Sannita. The Forre del Titerno form a canyon between the Erbano and Cigno mountains. It is 30 metres deep and 15 metres wide at its broadest point. The gorge therefore adds a distinctly natural aspect to the town’s cultural attractions.

The Forre di Lavello can be reached via the provincial road between Cerreto Sannita and Cusano Mutri; the final section is completed on foot. This sequence is important for your planning because the visit does not take place entirely by road. Another striking natural feature is La Leonessa in Cerreto Sannita. The formation consists of weather-eroded boulders of rock up to 30 metres high.

When choosing your hotel or another type of accommodation, you can therefore take the focus of your stay into account: the centre directs attention to churches, squares, palaces, museums and ceramics, while the Forre del Titerno, the Forre di Lavello and La Leonessa represent nature-focused destinations. This makes it possible to plan Cerreto Sannita as a destination for different interests without separating its cultural and scenic sides from one another.
