Faicchio: Fortress, Churches and Paths Through History
Accommodation in Faicchio
Faicchio combines medieval architecture, sacred art, historic paths and regional wine culture. The Castello Ducale was built in the 12th century at the instigation of the Sanframondo counts. This historic setting is complemented by the underground Acquedotto Romano di Fontanavecchia, dating from around the 3rd century BC, and the Grotta di San Michele, which was used by the Lombards around 700 for the worship of the Archangel Michael. Frescoes are still visible in the grotto.
Fortress, Mountains and Historic Connections
The Castello Ducale has a trapezoidal layout. Three of the originally four cylindrical towers have been preserved at its corners. The landscape around Monte Acero also bears traces of earlier eras: the megalithic Oscan-Samnite walls date from the 6th century BC, while the Arce di Monte Acero was a Samnite fortress used to observe enemies. The Ponte Fabio Massimo facilitated connections between Monte Acero and Monte Monaco.
Churches with Art and a Turbulent History
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta was built in the Baroque style and has marble altars. It houses sacred works of art, including frescoes and statues. Above the portal of the Chiesa di S. Maria di Costantinopoli is an aedicule containing the remains of a fresco dating from before 1688. In a chapel on the right-hand side, two frescoes depict the Last Supper and the Washing of the Feet.
The Chiesa di San Rocco was built after a plague epidemic in the 17th century. Its single-nave interior is vaulted by an elliptical dome with four oculi. The Chiesa di Santa Lucia contains six frescoes depicting the Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, as well as a choir with inlaid wooden stalls. The churches display different forms of sacred design: Baroque furnishings, murals and inlaid wooden choir stalls.
The complex of the Chiesa della B. V. Maria del Carmelo was built by the Carmelites in the 17th century. In 1898, it became the novitiate and motherhouse of the newly founded order of the Suore degli Angeli. The church preserves the mortal remains of Suor Serafina, who was beatified in Faicchio during a solemn ceremony on 28 May 2011.
The Cappella di San Francesco was the scene of a massacre committed by the Nazis on 15 October 1943. Four young men and a local farmer were killed. This site is therefore also one of the historic places that call for conscious and respectful reflection when learning about Faicchio.
Via Crucis and Getting There
The fully paved Via Crucis route begins in Faicchio's historic centre at Via D.A. Palmieri and leads to the Convento di San Pasquale. Another important point for planning: Faicchio has no direct rail connection. The nearest railway station is Telese Terme, which is connected to Naples and Benevento by regional train.
Festivals and Wine Culture
In August, the Medievalia event includes the Palio delle Contrade and celebrations in honour of the patron saint San Giovanni Battista. The DOC wine Falanghina del Sannio is also produced in Faicchio. The Sagra Enogastronomica takes place in September. This festival features the Fontana delle tre botti, from which wine gushes. Those choosing accommodation in Faicchio can therefore focus their stay on a range of options, from historic sightseeing and religious sites to a paved cultural trail and seasonal events.
