Nature at Parco del Grassano

Abbey and ancient city
The Abbazia Benedettina del Santo Salvatore is a monastic complex founded in the 9th century. Its archaeological and architectural remains attest to the Benedictine influence in the region. The abbey also played a fundamental role in the spread of Benedictine monasticism in southern Italy. Here, you can therefore encounter both architectural remains and an important chapter in Benedictine history.
Since 19 June 2010, the Telesia Antiquarium exhibition has been housed in the premises of the Benedictine Abbey of San Salvatore Telesino. It preserves Samnite and Roman finds dating from the 4th century BC to the 2nd century AD; these were excavated in the archaeological area of the ancient city of Telesia. Telesia is regarded as a Samnite and Roman city and as the origin of the Telesine civilisation.
Archaeological and sacred traces
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta preserves marble altars, devotional statues and a fresco of the Assumption of Mary. The castle of Rocca di San Salvatore Telesino was built in the 13th century by the Sanframondo family; today, only two towers remain visible.
At the foot of Monte Acero in San Salvatore Telesino are traces of a Samnite fortification. Polygonal blocks from a ring wall approximately three kilometres long, with two entrance gates, have been preserved. On the road to Telese Terme, you can also admire the ancient wall of Telesia.
On the route between Telese and Faicchio
For hiking enthusiasts, stage SI S18 of the Sentiero Italia CAI is relevant. It leads from Telese via San Salvatore Telesino northwards, around the summit of Monte Acero on its eastern side, and onward to Faicchio.
Struppolo and festive food culture
Struppolo, a savoury rustic dish prepared for centuries and originating in San Salvatore Telesino, is part of the local character. Traditionally, Struppolo was served together with Vanti at wedding and festive banquets as a symbol of abundance and wealth. Thus, the traditional festive culture is also among the subjects you can discover when exploring the town.
