Grottola among chestnut forests and volcanic landscapes

The municipal seat of Marzano Appio is located in the Località Grottola. Marzano Appio lies on the northeastern slope of the Roccamonfina volcano, amid dense chestnut forests, and extends partly along the ridge of a hill and partly on the top of a small elevation. This topography shapes the first impression: Grottola stands for a landscape in which forests and volcanically formed elevations belong closely together.

The volcanic character is particularly evident at Lago delle Corree. The lake is of volcanic origin and is one of the crater lakes that collect water after volcanic activity has ceased. It lies along the Casilina road, has a characteristic cone shape and is nestled between granite rocks. Here, you can experience a clearly recognizable geological formation together with a distinctive landscape.

Architecture, churches and frescoes

In the municipality of Marzano Appio, Castello di Terracorpo stands on a rectangular ground plan; its present form reflects the character of a Renaissance palace. For travelers interested in culture, the ground plan and Renaissance character are the main points of interest here.

The Chiesa dell'Annunziata has a façade with a rose window. After suffering severe war damage, the church was rebuilt and reopened for worship in 1956. Admission is free.

In the Località Valle Cupa, also within the municipality of Marzano Appio, the Cappella di Santa Maria del Carmine contains frescoes from the 15th century. Among them is a Madonna and Child showing a clear Umbrian cultural influence. The site broadens the cultural perspective from Renaissance architecture and church building to painting and regional influences.

Hike via Terracorpo

For active days, the Località Grottola is a starting point: a hike to the Santuario della Madonna dei Lattani begins here and leads through the medieval village of Terracorpo. Along the way, white-and-red MIBACT-CAI markings indicate the route from a fork onward. The route thus combines nature and culture in a single hike without merging the individual stops.

Terracorpo adds a distinctive landscape aspect of its own. From the higher part of the medieval village, the view extends as far as Mount Vesuvius. It is precisely this change between the trail, the historic settlement and the expansive view that makes the hike varied in theme.

Festival dates

The festivals also add their own highlights. The Fiera di San Giacomo takes place on 25 and 26 July and was established in 1299 by King Charles of Anjou of Naples. The Sagra della castagna takes place at the end of October. Those who include the dates in their travel planning can distinguish between a summer festival and an autumn chestnut event.
