Historic Center and Medieval Traces

The origins of Pontelatone's historic center date back to the 10th century, during the Lombard period. Pontelatone is considered a well-preserved example of an early medieval settlement that reached its greatest flourishing in the 15th century. Stone bifora, trifora and monofora windows, as well as carved frames and portals, can be found on façades and in courtyards. It is precisely this combination of settlement structure and individual architectural details that makes the historic center rewarding for visitors interested in cultural history.

One preserved element of the old castle is La Torre Angioina. The tower is regarded as evidence of the original fortification built to defend the town; this fortification is attributed to Tommaso Marzano. Thus, Pontelatone is not only about the development of the historic center, but also about the town's earlier protection by means of a fortified complex.

Ancient Routes and Religious Architecture

Trebula Balliensis originated as an Oscan settlement around the 9th century BC. The visible remains include part of the polygonal city wall, as well as numerous gates and gateways. Baths, a theater and a forum are documented within the settlement. The ancient settlement therefore offers a view of a much older historical period than Pontelatone's medieval center.

The Chiesa di Sant'Andrea di Casalicchio lies on the slope of Monte Friento, at the edge of the ancient route leading from the fortified Samnite settlement of Trebula into the plain. On the outside, the church features high-relief decoration made of tuff, with animal, plant and abstract depictions in a distinctly early medieval style. Stone fragments and inscriptions from the imperial period were also reused in the church walls and as doorposts for the portal.

The Chiesa Maria Santissima dell'Orazione was built between 979 and 1300 and houses a 16th-century fresco of the Virgin and Child. Another historic church is the Chiesa Santa Maria del Carmine: it was built in 1645, and its function as a parish church can be traced back to that time. Its interior contains several Neapolitan statues from the 18th century.

Wooded Mountains and Local Flavor

The landscape around Pontelatone includes wooded and reforested mountain areas such as Monte Frigento, Monte di Giano, Costa di veccia, Monte S. Erasmo and Lenza longa Cerreta. In other higher-altitude areas, chestnut trees and holm oaks grow mainly. There are also mixed forests with downy oaks, hornbeams, manna ashes and numerous holm oaks. This diversity gives the surroundings a distinct landscape character that clearly differs from the stone monuments in the historic center.

The wildlife of Pontelatone includes foxes and wild boars. The town also has its own culinary profile: A few years ago, the Slow Food Presidium “conciato romano” was established in Pontelatone. When planning your trip, nature observation and regional cuisine can therefore be considered as distinct interests alongside local history.

Getting There and Practical Orientation

Stazione di Pontelatone is a railway stop on the Napoli–Piedimonte Matese line, which is also called Alifana alta; it is connected with the Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV). The entrance and parking area of Stazione di Pontelatone are accessible to wheelchair users.

When choosing your hotel, you can align the focus of your trip with the town's features: The historic center, La Torre Angioina and the churches appeal to those interested in architecture and history, while Monte Frigento, Monte di Giano and the other wooded areas shape the landscape character. The ancient traces of Trebula Balliensis and the “conciato romano” complement this selection with archaeology and regional specialties.
