Sessa Aurunca: Antiquity, Cathedrals and Hiking Trails

The Museo archeologico nazionale di Sessa Aurunca is housed in the ducal palace. A 3D reconstruction of the Roman Theatre helps you understand the building's spatial form. The Roman Theatre itself has been temporarily closed to the public since November 17, 2025, due to restoration and enhancement works.

Near the Roman Theatre is the Criptoportico, a probably publicly used building from the Sullan or late Sullan period. It has three arms and vaulted galleries. Graffiti bearing the names of poets and lines from Virgil suggest that it may have been used as a school. This gives the site both architectural clarity and an unusual trace of everyday life in antiquity.

The Cathedral of Sessa Aurunca was built in the 12th century using spolia from the Roman Theatre. It preserves a mosaic floor in opus alexandrinum and a precious 13th-century ambo. At the same time, it is an example of Romanesque-Cassinese architecture. In the Chiesa dell'Annunziata, Sebastiano Conca's Annunciation is displayed above the wooden choir stalls in the presbytery.

The Chiesa dell'Annunziata was commissioned around 1489 by the guild of tanners and shoemakers, together with an adjoining hospital and an educational institution. Another link to the Roman past is the Ponte Ronaco: the bridge has 21 Trajanic-era arches and partly preserves the Roman paving made of basalt blocks.

Museums and Underground Heritage

In the Grande Sala of the MuDiSe, you can see objects from the Catacomba di San Casto in Sessa Aurunca, including removed and restored wall frescoes. The Grande Sala also displays archaeological finds from sites in the diocese's territory, including statues, sculptures and ceramics. The Catacombe di San Casto were opened to visitors after a long restoration and research campaign.

Monte Ofelio and the Path to the Megalithic Walls

Monte Ofelio in Sessa Aurunca is a dome-shaped volcanic cone belonging to the Roccamonfina volcanic system. A landscape- and archaeology-focused addition is the “Da Cescheto alle Mura Megalitiche” trail. It takes hikers through chestnut forests to the ancient Mura Megalitiche and passes through the municipalities of Sessa Aurunca and Roccamonfina.

Religious Customs Throughout the Year

Holy Week in Sessa Aurunca includes processions, Carraciuni and other rites involving the entire community. During Lent and the Processione dei Misteri, the Miserere is performed by three singers. Alongside buildings and museums, these customs give a stay a distinctly communal and spiritual dimension.
