Ercolano: Ancient City and Vesuvius Landscape

Ercolano combines exceptionally vivid archaeology with insights into the landscape of the Vesuvius area. The archaeological site makes it possible to reconstruct everyday life in an ancient city at a specific point in history. Together with Pompeii and Oplontis, Ercolano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic remains include streets, villas, shops, thermal baths and places of worship.

Archaeological Insights into Everyday Life

The excavated city follows a clear layout: the decumani run parallel to the coast, while the cardines are arranged perpendicular to them. This structure also makes the ancient site interesting for visitors interested in urban planning and the everyday life of past eras.

Among the significant buildings are the suburban baths of Ercolano, which rank among the best-preserved Roman bath complexes in the world. The theater had a capacity of around 2,500 people. Beneath the modern city, the Villa dei Papiri remains buried in volcanic material; in the 18th century, it was extensively explored through underground tunnels.

Villas, Market and Modern Interpretation

Villa Campolieto represents another aspect of the area's history. It was built on behalf of Prince Luzio De Sangro, Duke of Casacalenda. In 1755, he commissioned Mario Gioffredo to design and carry out the work. The rear opens onto an elliptical portico with Tuscan columns. This forms a covered vantage point overlooking the sea. After six years of restoration, the villa was reopened for public use.

The MAV combines archaeology and technology to create an immersive visitor experience. Virtual reconstructions, holograms and interactive installations recreate everyday life in the Roman cities of Pompeii and Ercolano. The MAV comprises more than 70 multimedia installations in total. In the center of Ercolano, there is also the Resina Market, a market for vintage and retro fashion. It originated during the Second World War, when objects and clothing from passing American transport trains were sold.

Gran Cono and Views

The landscape can also be experienced along a distinctive route. Nature Trail No. 5, “Il Gran Cono,” begins at an elevation of 1,000 meters above sea level in the municipality of Ercolano. Its path leads over volcanic ash, lapilli and small lava flows that formed during the effusive phases of the 1944 eruption. From the summit of the “Gran Cono,” there are views of the Gulf of Naples and the city of Naples.

Travel Information

The archaeological park can be reached from Naples Central Station by taking the Circumvesuviana to Ercolano Scavi station and then walking for six minutes. By car, take the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway and exit at Ercolano Scavi. Another historic attraction is the Basilica di Santa Maria di Pugliano, considered the oldest church in Ercolano and the wider Vesuvius area.
