Procida between coastline and island nature
Procida has many different faces: long beaches, historic townscapes, maritime traditions and a distinctive island cuisine. Vivara: nature and archaeological traces
A special natural area is the Riserva Naturale Statale Isola di Vivara. More than 95 percent of its surface is covered by natural vegetation. Vivara also plays an important role on migratory routes between Europe and Africa as a resting and feeding ground for birds. The Riserva Naturale Statale Isola di Vivara was reopened to the public on August 28, 2026; access is only possible with an advance online reservation. At the Museo Civico di Procida, the exhibition dedicated to Sebastiano Tusa includes a selection of representative archaeological finds from Vivara.
Terra Murata and the history of Procida
The medieval village of Terra Murata is located at the highest point of Procida. In 1563, “la Terra,” which subsequently took the name Terra Murata, was equipped with defensive walls and watchtowers. The Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo, founded in 1026 as a Benedictine monastery, is also part of the area’s historical character. The abbey church was later dedicated, probably toward the end of the 15th century, to San Michele Arcangelo, the patron saint of Procida. The Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo has two entrances; the main entrance is called Porta del Carmine. The Museo del Mare di Procida focuses on a different aspect. It was established in 1996 to promote the island’s centuries-old seafaring traditions.
Marina Corricella and local specialties
Marina Corricella is Procida’s oldest fishing village and can be reached by sea or via four stairways. The marina developed its present form from the 17th century onward as an example of spontaneous architecture. Cala Pozzo Vecchio is also known as “Spiaggia del Postino.” The island’s culinary identity includes the lemons known as “limoni pane.” They are used for juice, in slices and in the classic salad. The cream filling of the island’s characteristic puff-pastry dessert, Lingua di pasta sfoglia, is flavored with lemon.
