Priora: Hiking Trails, Winemaking Tradition and Culture

Priora combines religious culture, hiking trails and winemaking tradition. The Chiesa Santa Maria del Toro, the hike to Regina Giovanna and the traditional Sagra dell'Uva each offer a different focus. There are also routes with specific trail data, as well as destinations in the nearby and wider surrounding area.

Chiesa Santa Maria del Toro and the route to Regina Giovanna

The Chiesa Santa Maria del Toro is a church in the village of Priora. After an ascent of approximately 400 metres, the hike to Regina Giovanna reaches the Chiesa Santa Maria del Toro in Priora. The elevation figure is expressly an approximation: for hike planning, the approximate ascent should be considered a separate component of the route, while the church is an established destination in the village.

Sagra dell'Uva: Festival, Wine and Winemaking Tradition

The Sagra dell'Uva provides a cultural focal point in Priora. The 2023 edition took place from 30 September to 2 October in Priora, in the hills of Sorrento, in connection with the Feast of Madonna del Rosario. The event featured food stalls serving sandwiches and wine. An exhibition of old agricultural equipment also recalled the tradition of the grape harvest.

Monasteries and Museum in the Nearby Area

The Monasterium s. Martini, a medieval monastery founded under Pope Georgius II, is located near Priora. The Museo Archeologico G. Vallet, a museum, is also in the nearby area. The Monastero di Santa Teresa is another monastery near Priora. The museum and the two monasteries are all located within the same nearby area relative to Priora.

Routes with Numbers and Landscape Views

For hike planning, Itinerario 16 – Sorrento – Sant'Agata via Li Schisani gives a total length of 3,400 metres, 355 metres of ascent and 20 metres of descent. The three values complement one another: the route is described not only by its length, but also by its elevation gain and elevation loss. For planning stages, distance and elevation profile should therefore be considered together. For personal planning, the route, ascent and descent can be recorded separately.

On Itinerario 15 – Sorrento – Sant'Agata via Acquacarbone, the route passes an old washhouse and subsequently offers a view of the Gulf of Naples. The old washhouse and the subsequent view of the Gulf form two successive reference points for planning the route. The transition from the old washhouse to the view of the Gulf of Naples thus connects a built landmark along the route with a landscape impression.
