The Il Vallone della Profica trail begins and ends in San Giuseppe Vesuviano, more precisely in the Santa Maria alla Scala district. As an out-and-back route, it is 4,382 metres long; the walking time is three hours. The trail has a medium difficulty level and is freely accessible on foot.

Architectural history and sacred architecture of the Santuario San Giuseppe

The Santuario San Giuseppe is open daily from 06:00 to 12:00 and from 17:00 to 19:30. Construction of the present monumental Santuario began on 8 November 1896; on 7 October 1956, it was elevated to the status of a sanctuary. A visit therefore brings together the architectural history of the present monumental Santuario and a sacred site with fixed daily opening hours.

Architecturally, the building has a Latin cross floor plan and three naves measuring 46 metres in length. Its dome reaches a height of 50 metres. Its features include a neoclassical façade and a richly decorated interior with a throne of Saint Joseph.

San Giuseppe Vesuviano was almost completely destroyed by the 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius and subsequently rebuilt in its entirety. Its origins go back to an agriculturally shaped area at a busy crossroads, where taverns and inns served travellers. The town’s development was therefore shaped both by agriculture and by a historic travel setting.

The Chiesa della Vergine Madre di Dio was built in the second half of the 18th century at the request of the local farmers by the Prince of Ottaviano. It complements the Santuario with another sacred point of reference from an earlier era and focuses attention on the town’s religious history.
