Churches and chapels with a clear history
The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Mercede was built in 1855 on the initiative of the Università di Fontana. It is located on the provincial road between Serrara and Fontana. Inside the church is a statue of Santa Maria della Mercede dating from 1850. Its location on the provincial road between Serrara and Fontana establishes a spatial connection to both districts.
A second notable stop is the chapel called Cappella di San Giacomo e dell'Assunta, better known as San Ciro. It was built in 1661. The present-day San Ciro church was built after the former chapel had been destroyed by the earthquake of 1883, and it was reconstructed at the end of the 19th century. Inside, it has two altars and an altarpiece depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Chronologically, the construction of the San Ciro chapel predates the construction of the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Mercede.
Cavascura between thermal history and natural formations
The thermal springs of Cavascura have been known since the Greek colonisation of the island of Ischia and flourished during Roman times. Cavascura is one of the oldest and largest thermal springs on Ischia. At the same time, the site preserves caves, a small waterfall and hot springs.
For spatial planning, the relationship with dei Maronti beach is particularly tangible: Cavascura is about 300 metres from the beach and can be reached via a warm stream. If you would like to connect Cavascura and dei Maronti beach spatially, use the approximate distance of 300 metres and the warm stream as your guide.
Fontana and Monte Epomeo
If you plan to visit Monte Epomeo, the shortest access route starts from Fontana. The Belvedere of Serrara offers a different focus: from there, the views extend across the Gulf of Naples and towards Capri and the Pontine Islands. Parts of the coast of Ischia and the area below are also visible. When planning around both highlights, the access route to Monte Epomeo and the Belvedere of Serrara should be considered separate stops.
Festa di San Michele Arcangelo
The Festa di San Michele Arcangelo in Sant'Angelo d'Ischia on 29 and 30 September includes Masses, a procession at sea with the statue of the saint on a fishing boat, and fireworks. The two festival days follow one another directly.
