Qualiano between Churches, Antiquity and Local Festival Culture

Qualiano combines sacred architecture, ancient traces and a local festival tradition. Sacred Architecture with a Long Building History

The parish church of Santo Stefano Protomartire was initially built on a smaller scale in the 17th century. The present building was reconstructed around 1712. A significant reconstruction took place from 1788 to 1790 after the previous church was demolished; the church was consecrated on 16 December 1790.

The structure’s design also deserves attention. Santo Stefano Protomartire has a Latin-cross floor plan with three naves. The rectangular bell tower stands separately to the right of the façade, is divided into three levels and is crowned by a lantern.

The church of Maria Santissima Immacolata is a considerably more recent sacred building: it was consecrated in 2009. Its interior has a circular floor plan. The presbytery contains a mosaic created in 2015 by Marko Ivan Rupnik depicting salvation history.

Ancient Traces in Qualiano

The ancient Consolare Campana road is documented in Qualiano and connected Capua, Aversa and Pozzuoli. Tombs, patrician villas, water cisterns and a rustic villa were discovered in the archaeological zone around S. Pietro ad Aram. The finds date from the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD.

A necropolis dating from the 4th century BC was uncovered during construction work for the first social-housing development on Via Cavour in Qualiano. The archaeological evidence suggests that Qualiano was a Roman statio where legions stopped on their way from Rome to Cuma. Archaeological remains also suggest that Qualiano was favored by the Roman patriciate because of its health-promoting climate and abundant vegetation.

Local Cuisine and a Dated Festival Event

The Sagra della Percoca nel Vino reached its fourth edition in 2025. The event was scheduled for Saturday, 6 September 2025, from 8 p.m. at Piazza G. D’Annunzio and Via Roma in Qualiano. The edition included food stalls and a food area serving traditional dishes. The fourth edition also featured live folk music by the group I Carbone.

Another insight into the town’s more recent development is provided by the Qualiano municipal library: it reopened in November 2021 after safety and adaptation works and at that time primarily served as a study room for students. This gives you a broad picture combining church architecture, archaeological sites, local food culture and public places.
