Sanctuaries and Historical Traces

The Santuario Maria SS. del Carpinello is a minor basilica and has an octagonal floor plan. Construction of the Chiesa Parrocchiale S. Maria Assunta in Cielo began in 1729. On 6 June 1742, Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo was elevated to the status of collegiate church by Pope Benedict XV. The church entrance is also accessible to people with disabilities.

Other historical destinations include the Eremo di Santa Maria degli Angeli. It was established at the beginning of the 17th century as an extension of the old Camaldoli, of which only ruins remain. A Roman villa rustica was discovered in the village of Pigna near Monte Donico; it may date from the 1st century BC or from the late Roman imperial period. A movable multi-part nativity scene depicts scenes from the Old and New Testaments.

Landscape and Regional Specialties

Visciano lies in a hollow at 340 metres above sea level. The eastern and northeastern sides are protected by the Campanian Apennines, an offshoot of the Irpinian Mountains. This location connects the town with a landscape in which nature, religious destinations and rural themes stand closely side by side.

Hazelnuts are cultivated on more than 1,000 hectares in Visciano. Nocciola di Visciano bears the municipal De.C.O. designation and gives the local food culture a clear regional identity.

Trails, Pilgrimage and Views

The old mule track from Nola to Visciano can be walked and leads to the Eremo dei Camaldoli. For cyclists, the cycling pilgrimage from Visciano to the Basilica di Maria Santissima Consolatrice in Visciano is connected with the Madonna del Carpinello, which is considered the patron saint of cyclists. Thus, both walking and cycling have a religiously shaped point of reference.

The sanctuary’s bell tower has a viewing point that can be reached via more than 313 steps or by lift. The viewing point at the Eremo dei Camaldoli, marked by a statue of the Redeemer, also offers a view across the entire Neapolitan plain.

Festivals and Cultural Life

The tradition of the Carro della Madonna del Carpinello began in 1931. The Carro Votivo announces the Visciano festival with songs inspired by popular religiosity and devotion to the Virgin Mary. The Festa Viscianese – also known as Luglio Viscianese and Festa di Visciano – is an annual celebration in honour of the Madonna del Carpinello and lasts from the Friday of the penultimate week of July until the following Thursday.

The Festa Viscianese includes the assembly on Saturday of a musical votive float in honour of Maria S.S. Consolatrice del Carpinello. On Monday, the procession of the Visciano Battenti takes place: it begins in Visciano, passes through several neighbouring municipalities and returns to the local sanctuary. Theatrialia took place from 9 June 2025 to 14 June 2025 in the arena of Parco Giovanni Paolo II in Visciano and honoured independent theatre as well as local culture.

Getting to Visciano

By car, the route to the sanctuary follows the A16 Napoli–Bari motorway, exiting at Tufino and then taking the turn-off for Visciano at the roundabout. By train, it is possible to travel via the Napoli–Baiano Circumvesuviana line to Nola railway station and then continue by bus to Visciano.
