Acerno between Mountains, River and History

Acerno lies in the heart of the Monti Picentini Regional Park. The Tusciano River rises in the mountains of Acerno and flows through its valleys. As a result, distinctive landscapes, traces of history and a unique local cuisine come together in and around the town.

Nature and Trails in the Monti Picentini

Monte Polveracchio reaches an elevation of 1,790 metres and has been designated a Naturalistic Oasis since 1988. The Fiumara di Tannera also shapes the natural landscape: it is considered a distinctive watercourse of the Monti Picentini and runs through centuries-old beech forests, rocky gorges and mountain streams. The Fiumara di Tannera route leads through the Gole di Tannera.

Another tangible connection between the mountain landscape and the town is Stage SI S08 of the Sentiero Italia CAI. It reaches Acerno via the wooded western slope of Monte Polveracchio, with a descent of 1,000 metres in elevation.

Churches, Ruins and Historical Evidence

Acerno's religious buildings include the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which dates from around 1504. The Madonna delle Grazie sanctuary was built around 1615 and originally bore the name Chiesa dell’Immacolata e delle Grazie.

Acerno Cathedral has a Latin-cross floor plan, a very high nave and a dome above the broad transept. Its central gate depicts Saint Donatus, Bishop of Arezzo and a 4th-century martyr.

The ruins of ancient Acerno stand northwest of the present-day settlement. In the Acerno valley, the ruins of one of two historic paper mills are also visible. It was probably built between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. The former monastery with the Church of Sant'Antonio is also one of Acerno's historical and architectural testimonies. Acerno's Industrial Archaeology Park brings together historical evidence, mining activities, geological resources and landscape values. It can be reached via a footpath that follows the former access route to the public washhouse and the existing municipal Ferriera road.

Local Specialties from Acerno

The Fragolata di Acerno is part of the town's culinary identity. This artisanally produced specialty of the local tradition has been made exclusively from wild woodland strawberries, Fragaria vesca L., from the Acerno area since 1981. In the production facilities, Fragolata is offered in portions of approximately 120 grams. Local cheese specialties include mozzarella, ricotta and caciocavallo. They are made from the milk of Podolica cattle from the Acerno area.
