Salerno between culture, coast and landscape

Salerno combines a multifaceted urban history with coastal landscapes and extensive natural and cultural areas in the province. This gives you different starting points for planning your trip: historic architecture, museums, viewpoints, archaeological sites and maritime connections stand alongside the landscapes of the Amalfi Coast and Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park.

Culture and history in Salerno

A prominent venue for those interested in culture is the Teatro Municipale Giuseppe Verdi. The theatre is a 19th-century wooden building with four tiers of boxes and a gallery. It was inaugurated on 15 April 1872 with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto. This makes it possible to trace both the architectural design and a clearly dated moment in music history through a single building.

The Museo Archeologico Provinciale presents archaeological evidence from throughout the province of Salerno. The period covered ranges from prehistory to the late Roman Empire. The painting collection of the Pinacoteca Provinciale complements this, spanning from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Its permanent exhibition is housed in five rooms and includes religious depictions, landscapes, still lifes and portraits.

The Palazzo Arcivescovile preserves several architectural layers: a colonnade reused on the exterior, the interior of an ancient Roman temple and a medieval ground plan. At the Giardino della Minerva, educational programmes focus instead on the history of the Scuola Medica Salernitana, botany, medicinal plants, cosmetics, and the identification and use of plants as food. The garden also offers guided programmes to sites associated with the Scuola Medica Salernitana.

Landscape between the gulf and the national park

The terraces of the Castello di Arechi offer a spectacular view of the gulf. The Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park provides a different landscape focus. It is a mountainous area structured by several river valleys descending towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. Numerous old paths cross the park; at the same time, it is an important hub in the national hiking-trail network.

The Costiera Amalfitana in the province of Salerno also contributes to the region's diversity. It is a UNESCO cultural landscape shaped by the interaction of nature and human activity. The landscape includes orchards and vineyards cultivated on terraces, while the Amalfi Coast as a whole encompasses 15 municipalities in the province of Salerno. The province's UNESCO World Heritage includes parts of Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, the archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia, and the monumental Certosa di Padula.

Further destinations for different interests can be found in the immediate surroundings of Salerno: the Museo Diocesano Salerno and the Virtual Museum of Salerno's Medical School are museums, the Palazzo Fruscione is a palace, and the Villa Guariglia is also a museum. The Spiaggia di Vietri sul Mare beach and the summit of San Liberatore are also located nearby. The viewpoints Panorama Costiera Amalfitana and Terrazza Dell'infinito are in the area around Salerno.

Maritime connections and special travel occasions

Salerno is an important terminus of the maritime transport network connecting the tourist destinations along the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento Coast. For a trip intended to combine the city, coast and other landscapes, this aspect provides important guidance when choosing where to stay. Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park also promotes the Fuori Traccia project for sustainable tourism and soft mobility.

Salerno takes on a distinctive seasonal character through Luci d’Artista. For more than two decades, the event has accompanied the city's Christmas celebrations and brought light installations to streets and squares. The themes include myths and fairy tales, nature and stars, performances and emotions. In this way, a festive urban atmosphere complements the ever-present cultural, historical and landscape themes.
