Monasteries, Castles and Living History

The Castello di Sant'Adiutore stands on the 467-metre-high, cone-shaped Sant’Adiutore hill. The hill’s ancient fortification can be traced back to the 11th century in documentary records. Associated with the Castello is the Festa del Monte Castello: it draws on legends relating to the castle and is celebrated during the Octave of Corpus Christi.

The Abbazia Benedettina della SS. Trinità was declared a national monument by the Italian state in 1867. Its monumental tour includes a Romanesque cloister. The complex also includes a library that preserves around 15,000 parchments dating from the 8th to the 19th century. The fortified village of Corpo di Cava was established between 1080 and 1090.

The Complesso Monumentale San Giovanni was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its restored central area is the Giardino delle Clarisse, which was designed in honour of the Poor Clares. The Convento dei Minimi adjoins the Basilica Pontificia di Santa Maria Incoronata dell'Olmo. The convent has a 16th-century cloister that serves as a venue for concerts. The restored Fontana dei Delfini is a historic fountain and the landmark of its square.

The Santuario di San Francesco d’Assisi e Sant’Antonio da Padova has a history dating back to the 16th century. It was founded to support ecclesiastical studies for students who could not afford to stay in Naples. The Museo Mamma Lucia was opened in 2023 in honour of Mamma Lucia. It preserves letters, newspaper articles and photographs documenting her efforts to recover the remains of fallen soldiers.

Paths between Corpo di Cava and Monte Caruso

The Itinerario storico delle Torri leads to eight ancient towers associated with the traditional gioco dei colombi. The CAI trail Da Corpo di Cava a Foce di Tramonti connects Corpo di Cava with the Alta Via dei Monti Lattari. It begins in Corpo di Cava, which can be reached by car or by CSTP bus from Cava dei Tirreni or Vietri Sul Mare.

The CAI trail Da Corpo di Cava a Foce di Tramonti is currently not easy to walk because of tree trunks, undergrowth and CAI markings that have partly disappeared. The Eremo di San Martino can only be reached on foot; parking is available along the road or in the hamlet of San Martino.

In the Monte Caruso area, two trails with different characteristics are available. The Dal Centro Visite a Monte Caruso Variante trail is 5.4 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 403 metres and is suitable for experienced hikers. L’itinerario del boscaiolo leads from the visitor centre of Parco Oasi Diecimare to Monte Caruso and is an easy trail 4.3 kilometres long with an elevation gain of 345 metres.

Parco Naturale Diecimare comprises oak and beech forests, Mediterranean maquis, garrigue and upland grassland. Its landscapes therefore range from forested areas to open habitats characterised by Mediterranean vegetation.
