Li Morge is a formation of large monolithic stones, some of which are overgrown with vegetation. This landscape also includes the flat stone slab known as “a preta Nzitata.” It is associated with an old pilgrimage tradition: women threw nine small stones onto its surface. If the stones remained in place, this was regarded as confirmation of a pregnancy.
The LocalitĂ Mezzoni is a reforestation area with Aleppo pines and is suitable for nature excursions. An old chestnut forest is located in the LocalitĂ Donnico, offering opportunities for walks and for discovering the biodiversity of Parco del Cilento. Both landscapes provide access to the natural surroundings of Omignano without the town losing its historic character.
Medieval Lanes and Historic Sites
Omignano’s medieval structure can be seen in its narrow lanes, stone houses, cellar rooms and numerous arches. The Church of San Nicola dates back to the 16th century. It contains the remains of Giulia Rocca, the lover of the philosopher Giambattista Vico. Palazzo De Feo was the residence of the Mazzacane princes and dates back to the 17th century.
The town is also connected to linguistic history: in 1924, the German philologist and linguist Gerhard Rohlfs chose Omignano as a site for his studies of southern Italian dialects. In addition to its architecture, the historic center therefore has another cultural dimension.
Local Cuisine and Traditional Customs
The Sagra del Monte Stella takes place every August and celebrates local gastronomy and regional traditions. Olive oil is one of the products of Omignano’s local agriculture, while handmade fusilli are part of the local culinary tradition. These two products represent a cuisine closely connected to agriculture and everyday life in the town.
The Marcia per la Pace
On July 12, the traditional Marcia per la Pace took place in Omignano Paese, starting at Piazza Roma and continuing to Monte della Stella. During this event, a sacred figure was carried alternately by men and women for seven kilometers. Along the ascent, prayer breaks were planned at wooden plaques bearing dedications to the Virgin Mary.
