A Village with Medieval Roots

The old medieval village of San Severino di Centola was established in the 10th or 11th century. San Severino was abandoned in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Stone houses, stables, and old oil mills preserve details of rural Cilentan architecture.

Castle, Palazzo, and Churches

San Severino Castle was one of the first buildings erected on the rock above the Mingardo Valley. From the old village, it was possible to control access to the Gola del Diavolo. The Palazzo Baronale di San Severino was built in the 15th century, several centuries after the village was established, and is the largest building in the old village.

The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is located in the southern part of old San Severino. Its single-nave layout and pentagonal apse define its architectural form. The Church of San Nicola also has a single nave, but with a semicircular apse. Its bell tower is still in operation, and some special religious celebrations are still held in the church today. The different apse shapes mark a clear architectural distinction between the two churches in the old village.

Museum on the History of Emigration

The abandoned village of San Severino di Centola is home to the Museo dell’Emigrante Cilentano. Objects on display illustrate the living environment of a farmer and emigrant. The museum also commemorates Cilentani who found work in Pennsylvania’s coal mines during the past century. Alongside the medieval history of the place, it therefore presents a personal and social history shaped by work, departure, and migration.

Hiking Trails with Views of the Valley and Ruins

The climb along the Sentiero dei Briganti offers views of the Gola del Diavolo and the ruins of the medieval village of San Severino. Landscape and historical traces appear within the same walking perspective, without restricting the view to just one aspect. The Sentiero della Tragara begins at San Severino di Centola railway station, providing another distinctive starting point for finding your way around the town. For route planning, the ruins and the railway station mark two specific reference points for different trails around the old village of San Severino di Centola.

Commitment to San Severino

The “Pro San Severino medievale” association is committed to promoting the village as a tourist destination and maintaining it. This commitment complements the architectural evidence, churches, museum, and trails as central themes for exploring San Severino.
