Altedo: Tower, Church, Cycle Path and Green Asparagus

Altedo combines historical traces with a landscape best explored by bicycle and through its regional cuisine. Torre Gnudi, the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, Locanda Napoleone and the remains of a Roman building provide several distinct historical points of interest. There is also a cycle path along the Navile Canal, agricultural land and the green asparagus for which Altedo is known and which takes centre stage at a dedicated local event.

Towers, Church and Historic Buildings

Torre Gnudi is about six metres high and has a footprint of no more than 4.5 metres. Its lower section was used as an icehouse during the first years of the 19th century. You can view the tower from the outside; it is not possible to enter.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista houses a 16th-century painting attributed to the Bolognese painter Prospero Fontana. The bell tower contains a clock made in 1734 by Carlantonio Facchini, which shows the time with just one hand. Despite numerous restorations, the church has preserved its external architectural lines.

Another historical point of interest is Locanda Napoleone. The 18th-century building was commissioned by Count Ferdinando Marescalchi. In 1795, following a reorganisation of the post-chaise stops along the Bologna–Ferrara route, it became a post station.

The remains of a rural Roman building can also be found near Altedo. They came to light in spring 1992 during the laying of the Minerbio–Cortemaggiore gas pipeline.

Cycle Path Through the Fields and Along the Navile Canal

A 14-kilometre cycle path connects Malalbergo with the hamlets of Pegola and Altedo. The route passes through agricultural landscapes where prized asparagus is grown. A section of the cycle path between Malalbergo and Altedo runs along the Navile Canal.

Green Asparagus and Aqua Fitness

The Sagra dell'Asparago Verde is held in Altedo during the third and fourth weeks of May. On this occasion, you can try specialities made with green asparagus from Altedo. Aqua fitness is also offered at the Piscina di Altedo.

Travel Connections to Altedo and Malalbergo

From Bologna, take the A13 motorway to the Altedo exit. The route then continues along a local road to the SS 64 Porrettana and northwards to Malalbergo.

There is also bus route 356 connecting the towns: it links Bologna, Altedo, Malalbergo and Ferrara.

The privately owned Valle La Comune wetland oasis is located in the municipality of Malalbergo. It is accessible only by prior arrangement with the owners.
